We had just visited Queen's Cross Church by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and were really wanting lunch. We noticed this cafe and thought we'd give it a try. I'm so glad we did! It's fantastically old fashioned, a cross between an American diner, superior greasy spoon and art deco ice cream parlour.
It's small and usually busy but we got a booth straight away and were served by a friendly and efficient waitress. The menu was quite extensive, with everything from ice cream, toasties and baked pots to pie beans and chips.
The good thing is everything is simple but freshly cooked or presented. I had a BLT and it was gorgeous, freshly cooked bacon with lettuce, tomato and mayo in a crispy roll. My husband had a cheese and ham toastie which disappeared v fast. The capucchinos were good too.
We almost wished we were hungrier so we could have tried some of the hot dishes as they looked and smelt appetizing. Maybe we'll get to go back some time.
This small cafe just ticks all the boxes and there are so few traditional places like this left in a glut of global trendy mediocrity. I'm glad this is so busy and hope it continues to be!
