“Lovely cottage, owners and location”
Reviewed 12 June 2012 for a stay in June 2012

We've just returned from spending an enjoyable week in the Glasgow Cottage. Anne and Roger, the owners, were most welcoming and very helpful indeed with any query we had. It was great to find tea, milk, bread and butter waiting for us along wih a good supply of the essentials. They have full info on local shops, eateries, pubs, tourist attractions, etc. (a drawer full of tantalising leaflets that we had no chance of completing).

The accomodation is pleasant and comfortable. The bedroom is roomier than it looks in the pictures, and the bed itself very comfortable. There is off-road parking right outside your door, and the street itself is pretty quiet.

A short walk takes you to the subway and a short journey to Glasgow central. However, there is so much to do on the west side we never went there: the Titan crane on The Clyde, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow University tour (and do take a look at the slightly gruesome exhibits in the Hunterian Museum within the university), a 30-minute drive to Loch Lomond and several cruises, or a 45 minute drive to Stirling Castle and The Wallace Monument.

Kelvingrove Museum is very varied and has plenty of exhibits for all ages - serious art in one corner, record-breaking wildlfe in another. The park it sits in is also worth a visit if the weather is up to it. The museums are all free (although a contribution is politely suggested), and within a 20-30 minute walk of the cottage. If you don't fancy the walk the buses are frequent.

The Three Judges is a great bar for some real ale. Brewdog (just opposite the Kelvingrove Museum) is even better. The beers may not be cheap, but they are quite Belgian in style and you can get unusual drinks such as the Beer Nip - a shot glass with a nip of 41% proof beer (yes, that's 41%).

Velvet Elvis has a simple menu, but all well cooked and often local sourced. Bruadar has so-so beers, but great burgers. Slightly further afield Shish Mahal is a great Indian restaurant (they claim to have invented chicken tikka masala), but beware the portions - especially starters - are enormous, and Strathvaigan does a great combination of traditional yet upmarket food.

If we have reason to visit this part of Glasgow again, we'll be back at The Glasgow Cottage.
