Owner description: This 35-meter-high rotating boat lift, the world’s first, connects the Forth & Clyde and Union canals.
Reviewed 2 April 2018

Went to see the wonderful Kelpies and at the same time visited The Wheel, which is a rotating boat lift connecting the Union Canal with the Forth and Clyde Canal. There was a boat trip just about to start on the Wheel when we arrived and it was very interesting to watch from the ground.

Had heard a lot about the wheel and seen it on TV on many occasions, the visitor centre has a large restaurant . A trip in the boat lifted by the wheel with good commentary was a unique experience but not cheap for a large family party but enjoyed by all ages

After taking in the Kelpies we decided to walk to the Falkirk Wheel. A four mile flat walk by the canal There were some interesting sculptures along the way making the walk less tedious and upon reaching the wheel I thought it well worth it. A magnificent piece of engineering. Walking the four mile back to the car was less impressive!

This structure is amazing to see. You can pay for a tour that takes you on a boat and rides the wheel. We just ate in their visitor center which had delicious food. My husband is an engineer so he was very interested in seeing this marvel. Although the concept is amazing, it’s not normally in my interests but we enjoyed our visit here. There is self-pay parking in the lots. And a fee for the tour.

Visited here in March 2018 with 2 young children. Visitor Center has toilets and cafe. There is a play area outside and more play activities available in the summer. The boat ride is fine for young children, not scary, smooth and safely undercover. The tour guides could make the tour chat more to suit children but overall it was quite interesting and fairly quick.
