On Grassmarket, not far form the Royal Mile. Far less crowded than on the Royal Mile. My wife had a very nice salad, but she said her lentil soup was a bit watery. My fish and chips was fine. Maggie's was recommended by a friend who said they use haddock, not cod. In any case, it was good. Attentive but busy staff.

Ordered drinks and food, drinks came out quickly then sat and waited and waited and waited. Couple sat at table next to us arrived 10 minutes after us got served their food and we still waited. Complained to the waiter who said it was on its way and they were busy. 20 minutes later we still were waiting and after asking to speak to the person in charge we eventually got our food after nearly an hour. Wife’s fish cakes were fine but my fish finger sandwich was terrible, had a couple of bites and left the rest ( the chips were nice ). Only good point was they waived the whole bill but still would never go back.

The drinks aren't particularly expensive, but aren't inexpensive either.
The variety is about as bog-standard as you can get this side of Weatherspoons.
The atmosphere is, well, that of a pub.
The food is pub fare, and perfectly acceptable.
In short, it's, well, a pub (albeit one with all the shlock you'd expect on the walls of anything this close to the Castle)
The bottom line - there's other/better stuff around, but if you end up here, it won't suck...

Maggie Dickson has plenty of atmosphere and great hospitality. We just stopped in for a drink because of the fantastic story about the person the pub is named for and found the staff to be charming, helpful and friendly. Great selection of whisky and staff ready and willing to make a recommendation. Lots of local charm.
