We love Zoo’s. Yes there are those who believe zoos should be done away with. Yes we understand that the ethical treatment of animals is what we should all strive for. Zoos do however, when done right, serve a purpose that could not be replicated. They can educate, they can protect endangered species and they can help to re-establish a species. All of these are good for the animals and the planet. Unfortunately, this was not one of those zoos.
The zoo is poorly laid out and poorly marked. There were a number of places we did not get to because we could not find them. The animal areas, at least for some, seemed quite small and restrictive. While the penguins and the Meer cats had seemingly large areas to roam the bears and Giant Pandas had little room in comparison.
Our trip to this zoo was not only disappointing it saddened us.

Thank you for leaving a review. We are sorry to hear you feel like this. One of our primary objectives here at Edinburgh Zoo is within the fields of conservation and education. The majority of the animals at Edinburgh Zoo are here because they are in special breeding programmes to conserve species which are threatened or endangered in the wild.
We are involved in several conservation projects. For example, the Scottish beaver project and the wild cat project at home, the giant armadillo project and the Budongo Conservation Field Station project abroad.
Our animals are here so visitors can come and see them, learn about them and find out more about them such as how they live in the wild. We try to tell people about why some animals are threatened in the wild and show them ways they can help including recycling and using sustainable products that don't harm the environment.
We hope that the more our visitors know about animals and the way they live, then the more they will want to help and protect them in their natural homes as well. Everyone can now see animals on television and some people are able to visit places like Africa or South America. However, for most of our visitors, the zoo is the place where they can see, smell and sometimes even touch these types of animals and watch their behaviour.
We have lots of school children that visit us for lessons and learn about the animals. They also learn about science, animal behaviour and how best to help the environment. They can then go back to school and work on projects about the animals they saw.
We hope this helps to reassure you about the dedicated work we do here at the Edinburgh Zoo.

I visited here as I was staying in the hotel next door and so pleased I did, it’s not the biggest zoo I’ve been to but it has a lovely relaxed feel to it and the animals were all in decent enclosures. I loved the Sun bears and the Giant Pandas and could have watched them for hours!
