Owner description: St Giles’ Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland’s chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen). Please do not book any tours through TripAdvisor, as they are not endorsed by the cathedral.

On the royal mile this was a stop we had not planned on but were glad we took the time. This is a spectacular cathedral. There is a 2-pound charge to take pictures – pay the fee! It was just wonderful to walk around this place and see the incredible architecture and details in the construction. It is truly amazing. There is one small room not to be missed where the detailing in wood is unbelievable.
This is a not to be missed place to see.

Very grand and imposing and situated in the middle of the Royal Mile.
Of particular interest to Australian visitors is the Thistle Chapel with the plaque for ex Prime Minister Robert Menzies who was a Knight of the Order of the Thistle.

St. Giles is beautiful, free to visit, convenient to everything on the Royal Mile, and well worth a quick pop in.

It's eyecatching on the outside and absolutely breathtaking from the inside.

If you are religiously inclined, attending worship here on Sunday morning is quite something. If you aren't, at least stop in to the chapel which is gorgeous and hearing about the knights and their personal crests is quite fun.

Gorgeous cathedral and we were lucky enough to hear the guest organist practicing for a recital later that day. Peaceful stop away from the hectic Royal Mile crowds.
