Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

A must see in Edinburgh. Very busy, but well staffed and interesting historical displays. Most are surprised to learn it was a military facility that is still in use.

This must-see site of Edinburgh is not off limits for those who cannot walk distances. The uphill walk can be avoided by taking the curtesy car located to the right of the moat. While the central castle area is not wheelchair friendly, there is still much that can be seen without climbing flights of stairs.

If you’re in Edinburgh, you have to visit Edinburgh Castle. We visited in June on a very hot day (atypical for Scotland!), but that did not hinder exploring. We had a Historic Scotland pass and arrived just before the gates opened, so the wait in line to get in was only about 10-15 minutes.

Once inside, go on a free guided tour to get yourself oriented. The Castle is quite large with many buildings, rather than one single traditional castle building. The tour helps to orient you to the buildings and castle layout, with some additional historical info. The castle has several levels, so be prepared to walk on some hilly terrain that is mostly rock and cobblestone.

Take the time to visit all the different small museums. We didn’t bother with an audio guide, as there are lots of signs and the museums are filled with information. The guide might not be worth the line.

We stayed until the 1 o’clock gun (a modern cannon!) and had lunch in the cafe next to the cannon area. Food was very good, and seeing the cannon fire was fun.

All in all, plan on spending most of your day at the Castle. Definitely not something to do if you only have an hour or two, the full experience takes several hours. But really worth it!

It is a must see because of its location. You get a grand view of the city of Edinburgh and beyond on a clear day, like the day we visited. The Castle itself is very ordinary and surprisingly sparse in historical artifacts.

Yes, it is hyped. Yes, it is crowded. Yes, it is a tad pricey. However, this is a gem that can be experienced in lots of different ways. Just for the view alone it is pretty special, much less the great history, the changing of guard, the wonderful interiors and all of the holdings. The gun salute is cool too. Seeing that it still houses active military makes you think about how important the Castle has been over time.
