Owner description: Edinburgh Castle is a world famous icon of Scotland and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site. It was recently voted top UK Heritage Attraction in the British Travel Awards and is Scotland’s number one paid-for tourist attraction. This most famous of Scottish castles has a complex building history. The oldest part, St Margaret's Chapel, dates from the 12th century; the Great Hall was erected by James IV around 1510; the Half Moon Battery by the Regent Morton in the late 16th century; and the Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War. The castle houses the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th century gun Mons Meg, the One O' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland.

It is a must see because of its location. You get a grand view of the city of Edinburgh and beyond on a clear day, like the day we visited. The Castle itself is very ordinary and surprisingly sparse in historical artifacts.

Yes, it is hyped. Yes, it is crowded. Yes, it is a tad pricey. However, this is a gem that can be experienced in lots of different ways. Just for the view alone it is pretty special, much less the great history, the changing of guard, the wonderful interiors and all of the holdings. The gun salute is cool too. Seeing that it still houses active military makes you think about how important the Castle has been over time.

Magnificent views and lots of history. Very helpful to have a guide. Lots of tourists and some long lines, but not to be missed.

A Historic Scotland site. On our must-see list. While it is a must see, we were underwhelmed. It may have been the rain or more likely it was the crowds. As one of the top two sites in Scotland it is busy all the time. We arrived to find a line up of hundreds waiting to get into the castle. This was at about 10 am. Luckily, we had taken a Historic Scotland membership before we arrived. This allowed us to go to the front of the line. Without this we probably would have passed on the castle.

The weather was typical Scotland, heavy clouds with a constant drizzle of rain. There were crowds of people everywhere with line ups forming for the top sites – including the Scottish crown jewels. We were lucky, having jumped the line we were able to get to most of the sites before the lines become too long. Our preference is the lesser castles – lots of history and few people. You can actually relax and enjoy your visit at these sites. This was far more of a let’s get through this to say we have been, than it was an enjoyable visit.

It is rich in history and huge in scale, but the crowds make it very difficult to enjoy. We also, are uninterested in the recent military history. While we understand it is a part of the Castle’s past we found a substantial portion of the castle given over to the recent military past. A shame really when the castle has so much other history that could be focused on.

Unfortunately, while it had been high on our to see list, we were disappointed with the experience.
