“Best Big House Ever”
Reviewed 11 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

We have been lucky to stay with groups in a few big houses in Scotland in what is a growing market.
Four families went with fourteen of us all told for an upmarket weekend away.
This is far and away the best ever.

Worth going through our "ideal check-list":
Friendly helpful welcome. Big Tick,
Modern plumbing and heating. Big Tick.
Bedrooms of a reasonably consistent size (no arguments). Big Tick
Great Scenery. Big Tick
Well equipped kitchen. Big Tick
Separate Dining Room. Big Tick
Plenty of public space. ie not greedy on bedrooms. Big Tick
Lots of Bathrooms (mainly on-suite). Big Tick
Entertainment (piano, games, snooker room, speakers, tvs, hundreds of books). Big Tick.
Good location (Easy access and lots to do). Big Tick.
Roaring fire. Big Tick
Comfortable Beds. Big Ticks
Outstanding Value. Huge Tick
Wow Factor. Huge Tick

A stunning blend of period features, and modern appliances with great design, access to the main house and gardens. Whoever did the design fit-out deserves an award. Faultless.
5* plus or even 6*!
Our own Downton Abbey
Will be back.

Thank you so much, Keith, for this honest - and glowing! - review. An incredible amount of hard work has gone into the Wing over the past five or six years - and it's worth it all when we hear how house parties like yours have had such a memorable stay. We'll do all we can to keep offering the same service and experience - all part of the legacy of Sir Walter and his most hospitable descendants... All the best, Marianne

“Trip of a lifetime at Abbotsford's Hope Scott Wing”

A friend had her 60th birthday with a house party in Scotland, and what a magical place to stay. The Hope Scott Wing of Abbotsford House is sheer perfection. First, it is gorgeous, beautifully appointed, and you want for nothing...nothing. When we arrived, we were given a tour of the "wing"...every bedroom is spectacular, and the bathrooms look like they were just renovated with the most beautiful top-of-the line fixtures. The beds were so comfortable with warm down duvets. The property is impeccable, and the attention to detail is outstanding. Many of us own vacation rentals and are in awe of the condition and comfort and beauty of the Hope Scott Wing.

We were a party of 12 and we easily fit around the table in the kitchen. Since we didn't have "staff," we usually ate in the kitchen but we often sat at the dining table for drinks before dinner. The kitchen is fully equipped and there are every baking dish you would ever need. Sometimes we would gather in the parlor for cocktails or an after dinner drink, and the parlor, with its gorgeous views of the gardens, easily accommodated our group.

After hours, we had access to the Abbottsford gardens that are truly spectacular.

The location for exploring the Borders area of Scotland is ideal. We took a long hike into the town of Melrose and to the Melrose Abbey. Another day we toured Stirling Castle. Another day we drove to St. Abbs and hiked the trail overlooking the North Sea. A week isn't long enough to explore the area.

Bottom line...the Hope Scott Wing of Abbotsford is a gem that sets a standard for future vacations. I suspect none of us will ever stay at such an elegant beautiful place ever again. Life in a castle is truly magical.

“The meaning of awesome”

Cannot say enough. Rooms were sumptuously furnished. Amazing showers (powerful and immediately warm) and heated towels. Nice blending of modern amenity concealed within a castle.

Kitchens were outstanding. Dinners and seating for 12 in our group were perfect in 2 dining areas. Scotch in the parlor next to fireplace a wonderful post dinner gathering.

Catering on site excellent. Full dinner ran 13 pounds per person. Tasty fish pie. Loved the sticky pudding!

Never thought this awesome an experience was possible. And I did not mention the walks and gardens

We had a great week at Abbotsford, Scotland. The home was amazing and beautiful. The staff, especially Marianne, was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the gardens and grounds as much as the house. We enjoyed touring the part opened to tourists. We drove to several abbeys and castles nearby and they were all so interesting. It was our first trip to Scotland and it made us want to go back.

Thanks so much for your feedback, Sue. We loved having you to stay (first Alabamans in the Wing!) - you really brought Abbotsford alive and were so hospitable towards me (burgers and punch galore!) - look forward to keeping in touch... Haste ye back! Blessings on you all, Marianne
