Looking for a nice stay (self-catering) that's different? You wouldn't go wrong with the Buchan Ness Lighthouse cottages. We stayed two nights in the Skerry Cottage (2 bedroom, living room, full kitchen, bath) and loved the stay. Shirley, the manager, is great--friendly, took care of all our needs and went well beyond what we expected. The facilities are super and the peat fire in the living room fireplace was a treat. The tariff for our nights was reasonable (high, but then the lighthouse cottages are special). We plan to book a stay again as soon as we can.
What a treat to stay at the Skerry Cottage! Sheila welcomed us warmly despite our late arrival on a stormy night! We loved the bright fresh flowers and the comfort of the beautiful cottage. The cottage was comfortable, warm, and very quiet despite the waves and wind outside. The history of the lighthouse and those who lived there was fascinating, what fun to imagine life here years ago!
The bed, bathroom, and living room with its peat fire were perfect and cozy.
The location is truly one-of-a-kind...the views of the ocean right outside were breathtaking and nearby walks around the island and on the shore were spectacular!
We enjoyed the fully equipped kitchen and ate all our meals in, but had a great day exploring nearby towns, stone circles, and local history.
Next time we'll stay longer!
Throughly enjoyed our two night stay at Skerry cottage and wished we could have stayed longer.
The cottage more or less has everything you would need to enjoy your stay. The heating was excellent as was the open fire in the living room. Every room was pleasantly decorated and the view from the kitchen/decking was fantastic.
The island itself easily covers 2 acres so great for kids/dogs to roam.
Would recommend visiting Cruden, Slains castle(careful with kids/dogs), Bullers of Buchan(careful with kids/dogs), Peterhead Prison, Fraserburgh beach and Aden Park in Mintlaw. If passing Ellon, we would also recommend the Brewdog Brewery. Very impressive. Kids and dogs welcome.
Plenty of other beaches and towns though to explore. We just didn't have enough time.
Boddam itself is a nice quiet fishing village.
It has a good Chip shop and very well stocked local shop. The usual big supermarkets are 5 minutes away in Peterhead if needed.
We will certainly recommend Skerry cottage to friends and family and hopefully return sometime in the future.
I'm a disabled veteran who knows when it's time to get away from my "normal environment"and coming to my little BOLTHOLE is EXACTLY the kind of surroundings I've been looking for for years and now that I've found it,I can say with great conviction that I will be a frequent guest ALL year round, during a storm it's so Atmospheric with the waves crashing against the little window of "dunndonie"cottage and your sitting with anticipation for the next wave to come,my little slice of heaven, and both hosts are an absolute pleasure to meet and you will NEVER forget your time at "buchaness lighthouse"because it's a place where MEMORIES are made in your life,in advance for your hospitality and your warm welcome I thank you for your support for the Veterans who served our country with Pride, and I personally don't think that there is enough people who appreciate the job that our Service Personal do/done but we have to rely on the "generosity"shown by people like Sheila and Mel. Ps see you both on the 27th
If you are looking for a quiet get away, then this place is it. Its a lovely spot along side a quiet village with lovely views. The cottage has all you need for self catering including a solid fuel fire for cosy moments. There are pathways for walking nearby but we didn't get that far. If you are looking for places to go nearby there isn't much to visit without travelling some miles.
