Owner description: Aberdeen has long prospered off of sea-based industries, from the boom of the city's fishing industry in the early 20th century to its oil industry today; this museum explores the historic developments behind the city's maritime industries.
Reviewed 2 April 2018

The Aberdeen Maritime Museum has a wealth of information on oil exploration, fishing with excellent working models and historical films showing shipbuilding and fishing. There are excellent films and in the Drawing Office there is a bakelite telephone which you can dial to hear interesting stories from the past.

The museum is on several floors and spreads across three buildings. It takes in a converted church, an old house which used to belong to one of Aberdeen's long forgotten provosts, these are connected by a new would which joins up the older parts of the museum.

The former church houses exhibits relating to Aberdeen's history, the harbour and ship building industry, The new section is devoted to the oil industry, and contains a large model of a platform extending down through four floors, and the former house contains an art exhibition and models of ships which are connected in some way with Aberdeen.

The section pertaining to the oil industry has several interactive exhibits, including operating a submergible as well as a reconstruction of a cabin on a platform. There are also films illustrating life on a platform and the process of going offshore.

A visit tot he museum will have aspects of interest to adults and children. A fairly quick visit will probably take between one and two hours. There is a cafe in the basement and a small gift shop on the ground floor.

Nice place worth visiting. My wife and baby spent an hour or so here and a friendly welcome was received.

Second time in Aberdeen and I didn't know much about the oil and gas industry in the sea here other than it existed. It was amazing to read about the history and how the times have changed to when Aberdeen was just a little port! With a family tie to the Piper-Alpha incident it was lovely to see the names of those involved. Lovely little gift shop too!

This is a great museum, especially when you consider that entry is free. There are a lot of items on display and a lot of information to digest.
