Owner description: The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within it's walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned mans cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.

Wasn’t too sure about this one but can honestly say I am so glad I went in, tour guides are amazing, they are so knowledgeable and professional. It was a bit eerie most times and I did feel as if we weren’t alone down there!! Tour was brilliant value for money and lasted well over an hour.
The tour guide does go in to a lot of detail regarding prisoners and their deaths but I thought it was really good to hear the history, well worth a visit.

Way cool place to visit with the kids. Hearing and seeing what people went through while there will make you appreciate life

Came here on the 27th June. It was an amazing experience and we learnt quite a lot from this. Our tour guide Rory was extremely helpful and always asked if we had questions. He also allowed us to stay outside of the execution room if we wanted too which was very useful. All staff were very friendly and helpful.

We did the tour of the jail. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a good insight to what it was like in the prison when operating. We got to walk all around the jail, even in the tunnel where they took prisoners to the court house.
Really enjoyed the tour.

Used our Hop On Hop Off tour bus ticket to get to the gaol, took about an hour and a half from the start point. We had pre-booked our tickets for the guided tour and arrived a bit early so we had a coffee and some cake from the attractive selection in the cafe ! We were given a 20% off voucher at the ticket office to use in the on site restaurant but we didn't get to take advantage of that unfortunately. The tour was so engaging and you really felt like you'd gone back in time at some points. As with most gaols we've visited, the buildings feel really old so it was difficult to grasp that this gaol stopped operating as recently as 1996. Thanks to the fantastic knowledge and fabulous delivery of our tour guide, Tricia, you really got a sense of the goings on in the gaol and what it may have felt like. The tour lasts an hour so can easily be fitted in to any schedule. Great value and a must for anyone visiting Belfast. Keep up the good work Tricia !
