Owner description: This dam transformed Cardiff's landscape from unsightly, marshy mudflats to dry, fertile land surrounding a pretty lake.

We’ve always wondered what was opposite Cardiff Bay, so when a local told us we could walk along the barrage to Penarth, we decided to give it a go. It wasn’t the best weather, windy and rainy, but we wrapped up well. It is a lovely, bracing walk with great views of the bay. There is a Ronald Dahl enormous crocodile bench about half way round, a good stopping place and photo opportunity. Penarth is completely different from Cardiff and has its own stunning views, as the town centre is really high up. There is a marina and, apparently, a pier, although we didn’t make it that far. There are 2 train stations in Penarth so you can get a train back to either the bay or the city centre.

Took a walk over here recently and really enjoyed the stroll. I didn't even realise you could walk over to Penarth Marina and even hire bikes to do it. You can walk over and see the people enjoying the speedboat rides. It was a bit windy when we did it but I would defiantly walk over here again.

We walked across from Penarth to Cardiff Bay and got the water taxi back.

Thoroughly enjoyable and we all had a great afternoon!

The barrage was great fun we managed to go on two boats who gave us an informative tour whilst we sailed around the Barrage. It was lovely and the boat owners were lovely and approachable.

Have visited several times as it's near Penarth marina. Always great to see the barrage being lifted and the boats going out to sea.
