Stopped at the Royal Oak for afternoon tea. It was fairly busy. Had to wait a long time for two cups of tea and scones. The table was dirty from the previous customers and there were copious amounts of crumbs on the floor, not the fault of the Hotel I thought. However, when we were served, the server brought a cloth to wipe the table down, sprayed it with cleaner and swept all the crumbs on to the floor, almost flicking them into our tea things which he had perched on one of the chairs! The server then proceeded to pick up each teacup in turn by placing his fingers over the rim of the cups in the manner of a crane, ie. not using the handle or holding the saucer. This makes my toes curl. I don't want someone's fingers all over the rim of my cup. The teapots looked a little grubby and the teacups had rime marks inside.
Apart from that the tea was good and the scones very nice, fresh and tasty, but I think the service needs to be sharpened up a bit. There really is no excuse for dirty cups etc. Staff should be trained on how to serve properly. You could have the best chef in the world but if your servers stick their thumbs in the food......More
