Rafters is part of a large complex of cottages in the grounds of a manor and farm, surrounded by parkland and fields with sheep. Upon arrival we were delighted to find a substantial welcome hamper of goodies: milk, bread, eggs from the farm etc. which we consumed with relish. Rafters itself is cosy, comfortable and homely and, apart from the occasional sound coming from below, very peaceful and relaxing. A short walk through the field at the rear of the property takes you into. Broadway itself and the fabulous Crown and Trumpet pub, though the map provided for this could be clearer. Despite its proximity to Broadway, you feel splendidly isolated from the outside world....a perfect retreat. The only negative points are that there is no dishwasher and clothes-washing facilities are located in a shed outside which is shared with the other cottages....not what you might expect for a cottage of this price range.
As well as a warm welcome by the owners we had a 'welcome pack' in the beautiful apartment (bread, milk, free range eggs, tea, coffee etc.) which was a really nice touch, and made us feel immediately at home.
As we entered the driveway, with its beautiful sculpture hedges and lawns we knew that we were in for something special, and as we saw the beautiful manor house built from Cotswold stone we fell in love with the place.
Rafters apartment (aptly named as it's under the roof) looks great in the photos but is even better in reality, with all the exposed oak beams perfectly preserved. The alterations that have been done to convert it into a holiday let are perfect, with oak doors constructed from similarly aged boards that blend in seamlessly to create a visual warmth throughout.
The garden around the property (which you have complete access to) is huge, and the view from our windows was a sight to behold - we woke up the next morning to see ducks swimming on the pond and geese frolicking on the vast lawn as squirrels scampered about in the trees......a peaceful paradise!
All the additional facilities such as washing & drying machines, cycle store, barbeque etc. were a real bonus.
Broadway itself was only five minutes away on foot, using a path that passes by the garden and goes over a stream / field, and made for a relaxing stroll instead of using the car.
In conclusion, I would fully recommend a stay here - we'll definitely go back again in the future.
