We were recommended by friends to stay here for a family reunion in Newcastle.
It didn't disappoint on all levels. We were warmly welcomed by Camilla who could see i was a bit stressed from a 5hr drive without a Sat nav and promptly delivered the perfect antidote, a G&T-bliss! The bed was super comfortable and it was lovely to be able to have pre-dinner drinks and nibbles in our room with ease.
Great location too. While I wouldn't have my own house in this style, I loved the quirky humour all around-uplifting.

Room Tip: top room spacious, airy and quiet

Took my daughter here for her 21st birthday, and we loved it! The hotel was super quirky and had everything we needed for our stay. They were very attentive and went that extra mile decorating the room when they found out it was her birthday. Could not recommend more for a unique and fun weekend away in Jesmond.

Thanks so much Lucie for your kind words, we do try to make a special effort for guests celebrating, a special occasion, like a Birthday or an anniversary. We do dress the room before hand, if we are given notice, as it's such a lovely surprise for incoming guests. We hope that you will celebrate with us again. We will have the G&T at the ready.

Spent the weekend hear with 2 of my best friends - it was my 30th birthday, I am pregnant and from Hartlepool so didn’t want to venture too far away. Loved the look of this hotel as it catered for 3 people in one room - close enough to Newcastle city centre but far enough away to have some chill time! We had such a lovely lovely 2 night stay! The room was absolutely gorgeous, and had some extra little touches on arrival like nibbles and a nice bottle of wine! Even some lovely balloons on the bed!
We saw Kamilla a few times over the weekend - she was marvellous and really couldn’t do enough for us! Offering us drinks - and anything she could do for us she did! Such lovely helpful staff - without a doubt would return with friends again or my husband!
Thanks so much xxx

To be fair, the Rosebery is decorated in a quirky and interesting style. We thought the rooms were charming, though a little overcrowded. It was very clean, and the beds were comfortable. They also accept dogs.

We arrived at 3.30 in the afternoon, having driven up from London to see my son who is a student in Newcastle. I was not given the room I had been promised beside my mother on the ground floor. Instead I was on the first floor. I wasn't altogether happy with this as I wanted to be close to her to help her where needed and to have breakfast together, which we had booked to have in the room. I was surprised to see tomorrow's breakfast already in the bedroom (muffin and croissant wrapped in tin foil) in a basket on the table. I would prefer that my breakfast pastries were fresh, and I questioned it. I had been told that we COULD have breakfast in the room, which sounded nice, but in fact you HAVE to have breakfast in the bedroom, as there is no dining room. There is also no lounge area either. It is basically a series of bedrooms, off a staircase.

I asked for a copy of my receipt as I had been asked to pay in advance when I had booked on the phone a few days before, and had not yet received one. I was surprised to see a 2.5% charge for using a card. I had given a debit card, so I was charged an extra £9 for money that went straight into their bank account.

We went to dinner early and returned at 9pm. There were no staff around. My mother could not get into her bedroom as there was now a locked door into the ground floor lobby where her room was. I phoned the in hours and out of hours numbers quite a few times before I got an answer. The person who eventually answered gave me the code, and when I protested that this was not a satisfactory arrangement said that if I wasn't happy, we could leave. I was stunned. I said I would think about it, and went up to bed.

10.20pm I received an email from 'Claire and Sarah' which apologised for not giving us the code (Staff member had suffered a bereavement and should not have been at work) Here I quote: 'Very sadly it was also suggested that you were also unhappy with several things about the Rosebery since your check in today which saddens all our decent hardworking staff..
...if our guests cannot appreciate the vast amount of work, care and love that goes into such a period building, the rooms, common parts.... staff become dejected and in some cases guests have even reduced staff to tears. Which we have to avoid again at all costs. Therefore in light of your displeasure of the Rosebery in general and our essential and legal duty to mitigate and reduce risk to our committed staff.
It is advisable that you rebook elsewhere for tomorrow and we will refund tomorrow night and partially refund today stay, as a gesture of goodwill, as an apology for your access this evening. We simply cannot risk, staff being intimidated or in extreme cases bullied by unhappy guests.' There followed a list of other hotels in the Newcastle area, and a reminder that check out was at 10 in the morning.

I have never been asked to leave a hotel (or anywhere!) before. I am a middle aged woman travelling with an old lady who is a bit infirm. I did not intimidate or bully anyone and I am absolutely offended for it to be inferred that I did. The reaction of whoever I spoke to - I presume Claire, was out of all proportion to the offence - (I don't actually know what I did, but I gather from the email my offence was my supposed displeasure at the Rosebery). When we packed up and left in the morning there was no one around, and no one replied to my email asking why we had been asked to leave.

Incidentally, it is now 10 days since we left the Rosebery, and I have not yet received any refund. So if you are reading this 'Claire and Sarah' you still have time to refund the surcharge you put on my debit card, at the same time as the rest of the money you owe me. I have since checked and it is illegal to surcharge debit cards.

Someone has enjoyed kitting out the premises, and it has been done with flair. But hotels are service industries, and the treatment we received was unbelievable. I don't think that the Rosebery understand that the hotel is there for the guests, and not the guests there for the hotel. Glad to say the place we found for the following night was friendly and normal, and not all Newcastle people are as strange as the people running the Rosebery.

I found this place when I was looking for a cheap overnight hotel when I was travelling up for a meeting in Jesmond. It turned out to be an excellent choice although, I guess, not to everyone's taste. The decorations are eclectic and unusual but the bed is comfortable, the location is convenient and it is very good value. I was upgraded to an en-suite room but was then surprised I also had a chilled glass of white wine and some nuts and olives waiting for me in my room! I will certainly use it again if I am in the area.
