We queued for half an hour then waited another 30 minutes before our order arrived. It was worth the wait. We both had the mackerel wrap with salad, sauces and garlic potatoes. A generous portion and delicious.

Every now and again you come across something which blows you away. If Riley’s was on the Moon people would visit, but it’s not, it’s on a quaint bay on the North East Coast. We had salted hake which was fresh and tasted as good as anywhere we’d eaten. The rare breed steak was perfect. If ever the saying “don’t judge a book
by its cover” applied, it must apply to Riley’s. The rustic surroundings hide the cooking skills and the vista. Then there’s the smell of the clay oven. Awesome.

Really enjoyed our mackerel wraps, mind you wraps is a misnomer, if you are expecting a small tube with filling in as sold in most supermarkets and sandwich outlets, you will be disappointed, what we got was a tasty box containing mackerel, two tasty salads, great roasted potatoes, along side was a sourdough wrap, as well as two sauces. 25 minutes from order to eating, delivered out to us on the beach while we sat sipping our drinks sat in deck chairs, cannot fault the service or food in any way.

Take this review as you will. First off, they have a great location. They are located right on the beach and they are the only restaurant down there. If you are hungry and don't want to walk up the 100 yard up flight of stairs, this is your only option.

Staff were great and friendly. We ordered a few drinks and they were fine.

The issue isn't the food, but the menu and availability. My family and I wanted fish and chips and waited in line. While they were at the beach playing, I waited in line but couldn't find the menu. I eventually found it, after waiting in line for 20 minutes and saw that a lot of options were gone. It was handwritten, because their items are fresh daily.

One of the staff were announcing when certain fish or products were gone, and you could hear the groans of the others waiting, knowing they weren't going to get their desired item.

After waiting 45 minutes and moving 5 metres, we decided to leave. The line was massive, I was probably the 20th person in line, and there were at least 30 more people behind me waiting to order. If they didn't hear what was gone, or had previous knowledge of the menu, they may have been disappointed.

We left because the fish we wanted wasn't available and took a long time.

Prices are subjective as always, but on that day, fish and mash, as we didn't see any chips were about 17 pounds an order.

Possibly very good food, but for price and time and availability it didn't suit us . But again, staff were great.

Also if you go during lunch, line up earl. I mean probably about 11:30 and just wait. Miss the sun until they start taking orders, because if you miss that window... It was also bank holiday weekend so I don't know if that was an issue.

This was our first time to Riley's and it was lovely. Its quite a walk down the steps however the view from the restaurant is beautiful. Not many tables however this gives it its charm, however there are extra chairs outside that can accommodate more people, with some next to heaters and blankets provided.

As it is a small restaurant and a lot of people, there is a wait but that is expected as everything is freshly prepared. We ordered oysters and two mains which were overall quiet expensive but the quality was worth the price. The oysters were some of the best i have ever had and so fresh and the plaice and lobsters were also lovely.

We would defiantly come back again and dress a little warmer but the food and atmosphere is lovely, would recommend.

Hi there, Thankyou for your review.. I believe that you have left this on our quayside site as opposed to our Tynemouth one..

If you have time we would love it if you would consider swapping it over.

Thanks again.
