“Disappointing - this property was not as described”
Reviewed 11 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

I booked Ivy Cottage for a week at the end of September to celebrate my birthday with my husband and our mums.

To start on a positive note, the views and setting of the property were lovely, & ideally situated if you plan to explore Bath but don’t want to stay in the main city. The main lounge/dining area were upstairs and the bedrooms were downstairs. The lounge/dining area was spacious and charming in an olde worlde way with lots of character.

However, the whole property was shabby and many parts were in a state of disrepair. Most importantly, it was not as described on TripAdvisor. Instead of the 3 double bedrooms advertised, there were 2 double rooms & a very basic, gloomy, single room with a bunk bed in it. (The advert was changed after we reported it).

I informed the owner & she said she was surprised that there was ‘still a bunk bed’ in the room…..When pressed, she offered the option of taking out the top bunk. I searched for an alternative rental property in the area but could not find anything suitable at such short notice. One of our mums agreed to take the room, & the owner issued a partial refund.

We reluctantly accepted this compromise as the alternative would have been to go home, which would have been very disappointing for our mums (both in their eighties) who had been really looking forward to this holiday.

However, another problem arose in that the baths and hand-basins in both the en suite and main bathroom, became unusable. There was water on the floor of the en-suite when we arrived & the problem got worse. Water was backing up in both baths & leaking onto the floor. We contacted the owner about the problem but she said she could not get her usual plumber until the following morning. In fact, the plumber arrived over 30 hours after we reported the issue. The owner said that she had been unable to get an emergency plumber out sooner.

Our mothers were so distressed at not being able to wash I felt that we had no choice but to leave – so we went home two days early.

i am really sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at the cottage As I pointed out during our many conversations it is important to us that you have a good experience I accept that there were bunk beds in one of the rooms rather than the double you were expecting This was an unfortunate mistake as early this year we changed the rooms but the update was not saved on the website As no other guests had brought it to our attention we were unaware of this and it was updated immediately once it was brought to our attention. When our manager showed you around the cottage you did not express that this was a problem but when you rang me some hours later to express your displeasure you were offered a total refund and the option to cancel your stay. Alternatively I offered the top bunk to be removed that night or the bunks to be replaced next morning with a double bed or a partial refund of £250 gratuitous payment. You were quite happy with the generous £250 which was transferred immediately to your bank, the beds being no longer a problem to you.
Unfortunately on the 5th day of your stay there was a problem with the waste pipes The manager tried to rectify it herself but was unsuccessful and the plumber was informed immediately. Unfortunately he was unable to attend until the next morning where a breakdown in communication resulted in him being unable to access the cottage on two visits where he left you a note to inform you of these attempts. Through my contact with him during the day I was under the impression that things were proceeding as planned. When I was informed that the problem was not resolved on your return from your day out I contacted as soon as was possible but you had already decided to end your holiday, demanding a total refund of the full amount of your week long stay, despite my assurance that he would be there that night. It was unfortunate that you were on the drive and ready to leave when he arrived.
Once again I am extremely sorry that your stay was not as you would have wished.

“Nice change of pace from hustle of London.”

Our family of 6 (2 parents and 4 kids ages 14, 12, 10 , and 7) spent a weekend in this lovely home after several days of touring in London. This cottage in the English countryside was a nice change of pace from the crowds and noise of the city. We enjoyed both the WiFi and the TV reception for watching the UEFA 2016 cup. We had a cozy fire one night after an afternoon of adult napping and kids playing on the mini-trampoline in the back yard. I did laundry while we were there. There is a washer, but no dryer. There is a nice drying rack and with the help of our evening fire and a small space heater we had dry clothes by time to leave. I'm trying to convey our pleasure in staying there without being misleading to folks accustomed to grander vacations. This is a farm house not a luxury apartment. In particular, the sleeping quarters are in a daylight basement floor and had a damp smell the upon first walking in. This dissipated quickly, but might not be the best choice for someone with allergies. Also a word to those staying over the weekend. The Red Lion is an easy 3 minute walk. We walked there and had to walk right back home when we discovered they were all reserved for the 7:00pm hour on a Saturday night. I never thought of reservations! In the cottage there are towels and hand soap, but bring your on shampoo and conditioner. Getting and returning the key is very easy. Great customer service from our hosts. Note that a Car is a must. We enjoyed the short drive into Bath for one day of touring and then driving to Stonehenge on the next day. We also visited Castle Combe for a taste of the English Cotswolds. Our hosts went above and beyond by hunting around for my husband's lost wallet. It was found and mailed to us. Thank you! (Good thing I was carrying the passports).

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay It is well situated to get out and about easily
I apologise for the musty smell This was a small leak that dripped away unnoticed but has now been rectified The red lion used to let itself down by reserving tables far too early which is a pity as it is quite handy for the house We thought this had changed with the new managers And is something we haven't experienced personally but is worth mentioning to future guests so thanks for that

“A charming place to stay that gives you a taste of rural simplicity and peace”

We very much enjoyed our stay at Ivy Cottage. Some people might choose to grumble about the fact that it's a bit dark in some of the downstairs rooms, it has only one useable shower and is a little tricky to find initially, but for us the quirkiness and interest of the place more than compensated for any petty grumbles and we really missed seeing lambs and calves in the 'back garden' when we got home (and the trampoline too!). Lovely, thank you!

We are very lucky with the lambs and calves and they are always so full of fun. Something to really lift your heart if the sun is shining enough to take your first cuppa outside. Thank you for your review and so pleased to hear you enjoyed it.

“Lovely cottage with the most cosy atmosphere.”
Reviewed 7 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

We stayed in the Ivy Cottage for New Year's eve and as a surprise for a friends birthday. We were so happy with our choice ! The cottage was even more beautiful than in the pictures. So cosy, it didn't matter that it was raining, all we wanted to do was sit by the fire and play games. Linda and Pauline were so lovely and helpful. Great walks and little pubs around ! Bath is so close and made for a great day / night out. We are officially big fans of Woolverton and the Ivy Cottage and would love to come back asap !

“Lovely family weekend birthday celebration”
Reviewed 28 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

5 adults and 3 children had a fabulous time in this upside down cottage which the children loved! Thanks must go to both Linda and Pauline who went out of their way to be as accommodating as possible, including putting on some heating to take the ' chill off the air' prior to our arrival. The weather was great so the children loved being able to go outside in a small but safe environment. Only pity was that we could only stay for a weekend. Looking forward to going back in the future. Thanks again!
