Owner description: Visit Roman Vindolanda today and you will find one of the North East’s most famous and not to be missed tourist attractions lying in the beautiful landscape of Hadrian's Wall Country. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, Vindolanda is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' - the Vindolanda Writing Tablets - and is one Europe's most important Roman archeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year. The recently fully refurbished on site museum provides a breathtaking exploration of the Trust's ongoing discoveries and accounts of Roman life. There are no other places on earth where it is possible to experience Roman Britain, Hadrian's Wall and history coming to life before your very eyes all in one space! Come and explore it for yourself and find out why Vindolanda is treasured worldwide.

Excellent museum and site well presented
Went with dogs on a hot day and they were refused
Other historical sites in area allow dogs
Certainly wouldn’t leave them in a hot car at this time!

The size of the fort uncovered is impressive, really enjoyed it but some walking difficult with dodgy knee steep walk down to cafe and open air museum. Had sandwich in cafe, nice fresh food in clean cafe or eat outside, would recommend.

What an amazing site, so many rema8ns to be seen. It is good to see the volunteers looking for artefacts. Good walk around and well signposted.

Dont buy the multiple ticket as you will be 'romaned out' after this and not wish to see the roman army museum.
A stunning layout to see and freely walk around helps if you buy the guide book at the entrance so you know what you are looking at. There are signposts on the site but better to buy the book and read as you wander. you can always sell the guidebook on ebay afterwards. You need some imagination as most ruins are only knee high. There is no Hadrian's wall visible here. Make the effort to see the museum, gift shop and tea room. It is well worth the walk up the hill on the return. A very tranquil spot indeed.

Walking, with our dog as travelling companion, we turned up only to be turned away. There was a very cold wind blowing & occasional rain (storm Hector!) and the only solution would have been for us to take tours visiting the site while the other waited shivering outside with the dog - not even permitted to wait in the income/ticket office. Long live English Heritage & National Trust and their management of historic sites!
