An excellent menu, with vegetarians well catered for. Only slight disappointment was the thrice cooked chips - they seemed more like frozen chips unfortunately.

The service was excellent and staff very friendly. Will definitely visit again

Staff were friendly and attentive. The food was good and about the right portion size but probably a little expensive for what it was. The dining area was clean, well decorated and roomy and the atmosphere was good.

Extremely nice decor, warm welcome. waiting staff, Claire and Nicole, were charming, friendly, helpful and attentive. Three starters chosen - Duck egg, Pate, and Thai style Chicken were very nice. Two mains of fish and chips were excellent. Belly pork was awful - slimy 'crackling' stodgy meat. We were not charged for this dish. Wines overpriced.

We go out with our friends every few weeks and this time it was my turn to choose the restaurant and I chose The Swan at Lamport which I now bitterly regret.

We booked a table for 7.45 and we arrived early to have a drink before eating. My husband ordered a pint of Nobby’s which was off but the rest of us were served with the drinks of our choice.

We were taken through to the dining room and handed menus. After a few minutes a nice young man (Jason) came back to take our order, this was fine with the exception of my husband’s main course of gammon which we were told was not available. We felt we should have been told this when seated.

Anyway, the starters came; 2 Thai Peanut Chickens / 1 scallops / 1 squid. In the main, the starters were fine with the exception of the dressing for the chicken dishes. It resembled greasy dish water and was completely tasteless – fortunately neither were poured over the food and it got returned pretty much untouched.

During starters a young lady came over to enquire if everything was OK and at this point we gave the feedback about the chicken sauce for which she apologised. I personally asked her if she would be bringing our main courses, to which she replied yes she would be bringing them out very soon. At that time I suggested she should tie her long hair back or to get someone else to serve our food. I have to say throughout the rest of the evening and up to and including our departure she had still not tied back her long hair and was serving various tables! I feel it is not only her responsibility but the responsibility of the management to ensure staff are dressed correctly and have suitable conditions for work. Management should hand out scrunchies and send staff home if they refuse to wear them.

Anyway, that aside, she never returned to our table (thank god) but then the disaster of the main courses happened! We had 2 battered cods and 2 ducks with celeriac fondant. Well, firstly both ducks were overcooked, all vegetables were rock hard (I mean not even al dente) and the celeriac fondant was a massive chuck of rock. The chips served with the fish were extremely dry and had a half lemon to squirt over the fish but this had been charred under the grill??!!!

During the main my husband also tried to order an alternative ale / bitter which was also off at this point.

In summary the whole evening was a massive disappointment, a huge embarrassment for me as it was my suggestion and a complete catalogue of errors and we have no desire to return anytime soon.
