Have seen the posters but this week followed the signs to a real hidden treasure. There are numerous cabinets of interesting items all involving leather from Daniel Craig's James Bond shoes to Art Deco Leather screens and modern art sculptures heads! Philip the curator is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, the cabinets are changed regularly so always something new to see. Added bonus tea and coffee for a donation.
My wife and I decided to give this museum a chance not knowing what to expect (handbags and shoes?) NO, it was an altogether amazing experience displaying all aspects of a material we take for granted. The displays show items from centuries of how people from different cultures used this vital material. There are items that belonged to famous people too numerous to mention.
The museum has very knowledgeable staff who you can ask questions to.
Altogether it was a very eyeopening visit, (we have now been twice).
Parking is easy, just a short walk to the museum from the Grosvenor shopping centre carpark
What a great place - so much more than a museum. There are some amazing pieces such as the Theben leather underpants and fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls but also items from all periods of the world story of leather including some that I saw being made in the craft area so completely up to date! Well worth a visit.
