If you want to stay somewhere truly unique set in a beautiful location with lots of great things to do nearby then I can thoroughly recommend Platform 1.
The house has been converted and restored to a very high standard and makes for a very comfortable holiday cottage. We loved being right next to the railway line, with the trains going by. They only run every hour each way, so don’t disturb you too much and it’s quite fun to watch them go by and they are not noisy.
The kitchen is reasonably well equipped for basic cooking needs and is spacious, light and practical. The bathroom is well appointed with a nice shower. The bedroom is very comfortable, but only has a standard double bed and would really benefit from an upgrade to a Kingsize.
There are some great walks nearby and plenty to do in the region. The pubs in the nearby village are top quality and we had some fab meals.
We thoroughly congratulate and applaud Anne for creating such a warm and relaxing ambience, the elegant and stylish accommodation is made ready to invite you in and intent on 'wrapping its arms around you' as you settle into its charms and comfy settees. A feeling of calm and serenity prevails to smooth away all stresses and strains. This in spite of being just feet away from a working passenger-line, and those trains that do trundle past, up to four times an hour are neither a hindrance nor a nuisance but add to the attraction.
Your only task is that you are charged with replenishing the bird feeders with nuts and sit back and watch the abundant and colourful bird life compete with an acrobatic squirrel at the bird feeder; situated between you and the whose of a passing train. We experienced about four trains an hour consisting of short and long carriage electric trains, sadly not Steam! At nightfall, apart from the hooting of Tawny Owls in the pitch-darkness of the surrounding woods, there is blissful silence.
We are keen to return very soon to enjoy again the warm and welcoming embrace of Castle Howard Platform 1.
This was our second visit to Platform 1, we were so lucky to be able to visit again, The welcome basket of food was beautiful once again, it was like coming home, so comfortable, relaxing and peaceful. Beautiful countryside on the doorstep for dog walks. The highlight was watching the woodpecker on the peanut feeder, along with the other birds. We would love to visit again.
Me and my partner stayed here the bank holiday weekend in August with our dog. We love weekend breaks with the pooch, so this was perfect as its very dog friendly.
Anne was so helpful and very welcoming. We arrived to a beautiful welcome basket with fresh produce and a bottle of sparkly! This place is perfect if you want to relax but your still close enough a town. Although the house is attached to Anne's house you wouldn't even know they were there, its very private.
The only thing that would prevent us from going again is the cats, which we didn't know about before we booked. As we arrived the cat ran across the driveway which of course set our dog off as she is cat mad, which means for the two nights she didn't settle, running up and down the apartment and moaning to get to them, so we had two unsettled nights. BUT if your dog isn't bothered about cats I would defiantly recommend a visit, as that is the only, some what negative comment I have.
Anne was very friendly & provided a lovely welcome basket with the essentials & some tasty treats. The accommodation is very clean & well equipped. The wild birds on the feeders outside the windows were a pleasure to watch.
We had a wonderful day out at Castle Howard, well worth a visit. The local pubs are dog friendly and so are many of the local attractions.
