We stayed one night at Elmbank Hotel and were impressed by the character, the staff and the new bedroom block. It is in the process of being decorated, and the staffing levels were not generous, but the staff worked really hard to keep everyone served and happy. The decoration in the public rooms is fantastic. There is a big central hall area with comfortable seating, coffee tables fireplace and impressive staircase, bar, dining room and function room. I don't know what the bedrooms in the main building are like, but the new block bedrooms are comfortable, clean, and well equipped. The hotel is also more generous than many more expensive hotels on toiletries and room refreshments. Breakfast was ok, plenty of it, just nothing special. The location is about 10-15 min walk from the city wall and the buses run past. We would definitely stay again next time we are in York.

It was a friends birthday so 4 of us decided to stay at the Elmbank on a Friday. Our room was fab. It was really modern with lights in the bed frames and behind the television. It was out in the courtyard so we had to walk out the main hotel to get to it which was fine as it's just a little 30 second walk. The beds were clean and comfortable and our mini fridge was equipped with juice, chocolates and water which were all complimentary. Our friends on the other hand stayed in room 238. This room was in the main building and just up the stairs and the difference between the rooms was crazy. Of course I know there's a difference in rooms when you're paying a little extra or a little less but the standard rooms were quite shabby looking and out dated in comparison to the super modern superior double rooms. They were slightly similar in size but the decor was white and bland, the phone even looked abit discoloured and old and the whole room just resembled a bread and breakfast - which just isn't what you'd expect when seeing the decor in the main reception and the lounge. The breakfast on the morning was nice with a choice of your typical bacon, sausages, beans, eggs and so on and you could help yourself with a variety of granola, yogurt and cereals. It's only 10 minutes from the town centre so if you pay for a superior double room I couldn't complain you've got a great deal it was a fresh room. On the other hand if you pick just a normal standard room then you'll notice the difference.

Let me be clear by stating that this review covers only the restaurant facility and not the hotel bedrooms, which we didn't use.
This a group of around 30 people who had pre-booked meals. Interestingly, the waiter checked every table and allowed changes to the reserved meals.
Our starter was either Prawn Cocktail or Pumpkin Soup (being close to Halloween) and both were plentiful and tasty. My main course was Sirloin of Beef roast dinner (Chicken or a vegetarian dish was an option) and I was amazed at the quantity and quality. The beef was both plentiful, tender and well cooked and was accompanied by a mountain of roast potatoes, new potatoes, broccoli and carrots. I would have preferred the carrots to be less al dents but, hey, that's my personal taste. The Yorkshire Puddings could have been better but were reasonably acceptable and I've certainly eaten far worse. We had to request extra gravy but it was brought reasonably promptly.
I had a cheeseboard for last course and again there was a huge amount. There was a good wedge of Brie, an exceptionally nice, creamy mature cheddar and a very large amount of a Blue Cheese (Yorkshire Blue I believe) along with a good amount of biscuits, celery, apple and grapes.
Service could have been a little better but I think they were a little stretched. There were a couple of mistakes with orders but in fairness they were remedied fairly quickly, although two people on our table were "forgotten" on the pudding course and staff had to be reminded. The waiter did tend to refer to us as "guys" and "buddy" which grated on me but was otherwise efficient and friendly.
On the whole, we just couldn't fault the quantity and value so "thank you, Elmbank". I intend to return to dine again.

Absolutely awful hotel, the room smelt like damp, the bed felt like cardboard and the pillows like sleeping on plastic bags. The walls were paper thin and we could here everything in the next room. The shower was lukewarm and would randomly stop working. To top it off was quite expensive! Avoid at all costs!

Stayed here for 2 nights and it was an awful experience from start to finish. On arrival we noticed the carpets in the hall were filthy and poorly fitted. They were held in with duct tape in some cases! The room was an OK size but the furniture was old and cheap and the bed so uncomfortable I was left with back pain after 1 night. The kettle doesn't fit in the tiny sink so we had to buy bottled water just to have tea. There was no soap in the bathroom either. After the first night we came back to find our clothes dumped on the floor by the cleaners and the bed not even made properly. They'd also not given us any more milk for the tea, though possibly this was because they never expected anyone to get any use out of the kettle! The whole place was very noisy all the time, even during the night, so we were never able to get a good night's sleep. This wasn't due to other people, just the building itself. This hotel is an absolute joke and to make things worse it's not even that cheap. We'd recommend you avoid at all costs!

Room Tip: Don't bother booking
