We had a while to wait to book in at our hotel so we came here for a meal as it was nearby. We both had the game pie with chips and it was a huge plateful - unable to eat a lot of it. Reasonably tasty but everything covered in gravy which made the pastry very soggy, chips were quite good (at least the undrowned ones were), lots of veg on the plate, cauli which cooked without being overdone but couldn't even manage a taste of the courgettes and green beans. Dog wandering about which was fine until it peed on the floor next to us.

After looking for somewhere to eat found this on trip advisor. After reading mixed reviews decided to judge for ourselves.
Service very poor tables left uncleared & had to ask for the table to be cleared, this was done so slowly I helped clear glasses from our table.
Food was very average the lasagne can only be described as inedible. By the amount of food left it was evident the meal had not been enjoyed but we were not asked if everything was ok with our meals
I can definitely say we will not be returning to this pub or recommending it to anyone else .

The food here is good, a nice selection, including pies, burgers ext. There is however a lot of it. I doubt many could finish a full meal, which seems a bit of a waste.

I went into this pub on a Sunday evening for a steak pie and mash dinner, and was bitterly disappointed sadly. It came recommended from a year or so ago and thought I would try it out as e drink regularly in there. The mash was microwaved, in parts it was hard like a microwave meal. The steak pie pasty was raw on the bottom which made it very soggy. The vegetables were also microwave burnt and wrinkly, seemed to be a bit old or overdone. Surprising because I was very excited to eat here and even booked a table a week in advance. The drinks and atmosphere are nice however :) left hungry as the food was inedible

Came as a couple for Sunday meal, used to be a regular food eater here under previous management so wanted to see if the food was still at the exceptional level it once was

Answer no definitely not the menu is largely unchanged but the quality has certainly waived, raw pastry on the pies, microwaved mash and veggies such a shame for a place that once served probably the best pub food in york alas no more certainly if this visit was anything to go by...
