“Perfect getaway”
Reviewed 7 June 2015 for a stay in May 2015

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a fabulous time. The cottage is beautifully decorated and had everything we needed. The bathroom and bedroom are particularly gorgeous. In particular, the bedroom has lovely views across the harbour and the owner has thoughtfully placed two stools by the window so that you can see the view.
The property is arranged over 3 floors and would definitely not be suitable for anybody who ahs difficulty with stairs as they are very steep.
If you can manage the stairs, it's a wonderful base for exploring Whitby. Close to the Abbey and easy to walk from. The position is great. Close enough to the busy West side but far enough away to be peaceful. Close to pubs, restaurants (so many lovely places to eat).
The cottage was very clean and the bed linen lovely, fresh and tasteful.

Laverick steps has a perfect balance of retaining tradition balance with modern luxurious facilities. Amazingly clean, including bright white sheets and towels. The attention to detail makes all the difference. Chairs in perfect locations and a welcome bottle of wine on arrival all add to the homely feel.
The cottage has is very traditional and stairs are steep so not appropriate for people with mobility issues. It's views and central location means you don't have to travel far to enjoy all Whitby has to offer.
I'm an internet junky so not having internet access may put some people off although the local library pubs etc. do have Wi-Fi.
I really loved it:)

“a whitby gem”

we stayed her for three nights over the weekend of the musicport festival in october 2014. this is a lovely old cottage over three floors brought up to date. it has everything you might need for a holiday stay in this beautiful town. the sitting room/ kitchen is neat and tidy and well supplied (there was even a complimentary bottle of wine waiting on the table for us and milk and tea bags), little touches like this mean that the owners are considerate types. on the first floor is a lovely bathroom with grand fluffy towels and flannels. the bedroom is in the converted attic and has gorgeous views of the town and harbour to the front. just a five minute walk takes you into the heart of the town past "mr chips" our favourite whitby fish shop. if you are looking for self catering in whitby you couldn't go wrong with this place. it's a little gem. this cottage is suitable for two adults. there are two steep stair cases so i can't recommend it for people who might struggle on such a stairs and though you might have room for a cot in the bedroom, it wouldn't be easy to carry a baby up and down, but the owners will tell you that.

“Excellent base”

I have found Laverick Steps an excellent base for enjoying the annual Whitby Folk Week in August; this is my second visit and I have been happy to reserve it again for next year! It is a very comfortable and clean cottage with great views from the bedroom, and very handy for going anywhere in town. Parking is an issue everywhere in Whitby, but I bought a seven day parking permit for £42 from the Tourist Information Office next to the station which allows me to park anywhere in any of the long stay car parks in Whitby or Scarborough (providing there is a space!), so I've parked my car for the week in the Church Street car park 200 yards up the road opposite the Endeavour pub

“Very nice”

My wife and I have just arrived home from a week’s holiday in Whitby, North Yorkshire. We stayed at Belle Island Cottages, No2, Laverick Steps off Church Road. This property is certainly unusual as it would seem to be half of the full building but only contains 3 rooms. The property is accessed via a flight of 11 steps (hence the name, Laveric Steps). The front door leads straight into the living/ dining room / kitchen. From here a flight of stairs that are steep and narrow lead to the next floor which contains a spacious and well-appointed bathroom. A further narrow and steep staircase takes you to the bedroom at the top of the premises. A word of caution here, persons with mobility issues will find this holiday rental difficult to negotiate. The bedroom is spacious, bright, clean and cheerful with sufficient storage for two people, the bed comfortable although the unusual shape of the ceiling and placement of the bed means you should be careful to not bump your head. Two tall chairs are provided so that you can sit by the harbour facing window and enjoy the view, in addition, a TV is situated in the bedroom with a Sky Box. The bedroom has windows on 3 sides, The West facing one looks out over the harbour as already mentioned, the South windows give no view except that of the red tiled roof of the property next door and the East facing widow looks out towards the hill which rises behind Laverick Steps. As this his is built upon, the houses there are higher than Laverick Steps and provide the residents there with an excellent view directly into the bedroom.
The bathroom is fully tiled with a “P” bath and shower. It is large and airey with a window that also faces East, so keep those blinds draw!
The living room! Sadly this somewhat lets the property down, it is small, cramped and dim, the window to this room faces East out on to a small garden area that belongs to the property next door which, whilst we were there was used constantly by the residents of that building some of whom seemed to enjoy the pastime of staring in at us! The kitchen facilities are adequate with an electric hob and oven, a very cramped work surface containing the sink unit, microwave, toaster and kettle. A table is provided along with 2 bench seats and a further 2 armchairs. All of this within such a small room means there is very little space to move around. There is a refrigerator with small freezer compartment but no washing machine or other facilities, no ironing board or iron and no drying facilities for wet clothes. There is however another TV here which is linked to the Sky Box in the bedroom. If you want to watch Sky TV you need to turn the set top box on in the bedroom and then head back down. Unfortunately, the living room being so small, the TV is mounted high upon a wall and is quite difficult to see without getting a stiff neck.
On the plus side, the location is good being only about a 5 minute walk to the centre of Whitby via the swing bridge and about the same distance from the 199 steps to the old Abbey. There is a pub almost next door called The Middle Earth and a Fish and Chip shop about 20 yards (or metres) away.
Parking for this property is an issue, on road free parking is available on a first come – first served basis, but the road gets extremely busy and it really is a matter of luck getting a space. There is a pay to park area about 5 minutes walk away but this also is usually full. Off- loading and packing up is not a problem though. There is a generous pavement width right outside the property where a vehicle can be pulled on to for a short period.
Whitby itself is a nice place with harbour, estuary and sea views, cobbled streets and quaint little shops. Plenty of places to eat and lots of decent pubs all offering an excellent range of foods and real ales. Most of these offer entertainment of some kind ranging from quiz nights to live music, or simply enjoy the views. Bit on the expensive side though with the average price of a pint being around £3.20. All in all a nice place and my wife and I would certainly consider returning although having had a good look around we found that there are many self- catering apartments in better locations for about the same price and ones that offer Wi-Fi also where Laverick Steps does not.

Hi there would you email me at info.bellislandcottages.co.uk with some details about the neighbouring property guests so I can address it with them. We have not had that problem before but I can ask them to ask their guests to be more courteous. There is an iron and small ironing board in the downstairs storage cupboard but perhaps it got put to the back. We always point out that the cottage is not suitable for people with mobility problems but reviews pointing this out further are helpful best wishes Erica and Raj
