Description: The English Rose is a warm, welcoming cafe and tea room just a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of Victoria. We are an independent English family run cafe and catering business. We pride ourselves on our 'everything from scratch' attitude, with all our food being completely home-made, including our delicious cakes and scones! The English Rose is like an escape to a cosy Grandma's living room complete with gilt-rimmed mismatch china cups and saucers, picture filled walls, and an old (playable!) piano. Open 7 days a week, providing amazing eat-in and take-away prices (especially for painfully expensive central London!), The English Rose is the place for a little break from your standard cafe!

My partner and I stumbled across this place on a rainy bank holiday Monday. Soaked and windswept we were greeted with an enormous smile by Lucy. She made us feel very at home and chatted to us about the variety of scones and cakes on offer. She helps make them on site.

Lemon cake was superb. Lucy is an asset.

Our experience was exactly like Alison S. described here. Do not bother going there for afternoon tea unless you enjoy rock hard flat "scones", stale cake and sandwiches which taste bland. This place has absolutely nothing going for it.

Hi Christine

We are so sad to hear you had a bad experience at the cafe. We strive to provide great food but this was not the case here. Usually our scones and afternoon tea are a hit so we will investigate what went so wrong so this is never repeated! Thanks for the feedback.

Booked afternoon tea a couple of weeks in advance, we arrived at the cafe to be told by staff that if we wanted afternoon tea that they were 'low' on cakes. I explained that we had booked a table for us to which we had a few bemused faces as they seemingly had no recollection of a booking being made. Great. We sat down to which one of the staff said they could 'sort something out' regarding afternoon tea. We were served with a few sandwiches to which the bread was slightly stale, cut up selection of muffins and hard as rock 'scones' these were not scones they were more biscuit and very doughy. Highly unpleasant we sent them back as they were inedible to be given some more which were just as unpleasant. When paying we spoke to one of the staff and asked if the cafe had changed owners to which they replied that there was a new manager....such a shame as I visited here a year ago and my review was a positive one I had a great experience then but my experience now was vastly different and very disappointing. Even the staff said she felt embarrassed serving our afternoon! To which we were given a discount however this doesn't distract from the fact that this cafe needs a major overhaul to make it what it once was.

Hi Alison

Thanks for your feedback. We are very sad to hear that your experience was not a good one. You should not have been served anything other than delicious food and this was not the case! Reading your previous review of the cafe you obviously had a great experience which we of course want to replicate. We have not changed owners, but hired a temporary manager who allowed standards to drop dramatically, which of course has now been dealt with, but unfortunately you were a guest during this time. We are so disappointed that yourself, as a returning customer, did not receive the standard we hold, and hope that despite this you will return again now that our standard is back what it once was.

Staff working at the food counter with long greasy hair not tied back hanging all over the food. Really off putting and unhygienic.

Hi lmand2018,

Thanks for your review. We are really disappointed to hear that the staff member you saw was not adhering to the cafe's food hygiene rules. We have investigated and will ensure that this will not happen again. All team members are under strict instructions in terms of hygiene, including keeping all hair tied up at all times. We are disappointed that this was an issue enough to leave a 1 star review, but I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your visit despite this.
