I have just experienced Viola's Room. I was wowed by the clever use of lights and sound to guide you through the story. I liked how well thought through everything was and how clear the instructions and guidance were . I enjoyed moving through the experience in a small group of six too, the group size felt just right. The story reminded me of a sleep story on a mindfulness app- not the most thrilling of tales but it was a really fun experience that I am so glad that I tried. I can't wait to see what Punchdrunk do next.
I use a wheelchair. Last time I went with a friend. This time flew solo, but helped by my chaperone. He didn’t guide me round. But if I asked for suggestions for where next he was helpful and supportive.
Saw lots of angles and scenes from different perspectives and in different order.
Glad I came back. Sad it’s closing shortly.
A few years ago I watched the Drowned Man and I was impressed, hence, I came back.
The Burnt City didn't meet my expectations, the stages were very small and there were very few actors, too many people inside small spaces, everyone was pushing other people and running behind the few actors that were performing.
There wasn't a route to follow, therefore it was not straight forward to follow the story, it was all very confusing.
I think this time they have been too greedy, I am not sure if I would go back again.
I've been waiting to go to Punchdrunk Theatre since I learned about it at University seven years ago. With all that build up I was worried I would be let down. I was not. The Burnt City was absolutely astounding. The lights, sound, costumes, choreography, direction, and emotion were all absolutely incredible. Halfway through we thought we were done and went to find the exit and stumbled upon an entirely different world we hadn't noticed before. Wear walking shoes and expect to wear a full face mask (not uncomfortable). There were moments that I just stood there with my heart to my chest in absolute disbelief of the passion, the emotion, and the incredible storytelling.
When I mixed up my reservation day they were incredibly understanding when I sent them an email and they helped me get in the next day.
I use a wheelchair. Booking was a nightmare. They don’t access the access booking line, and didn’t respond to e-mails to the access booking e-Mail address. I eventually got a call back and booked for me and my “essential companion”. But it took 2 weeks to book two tickets.
Arrived on time. Met at entrance. Escorted through reception. Dropped off coats. Phones bagged,
A young man introduced himself as my chaperone. He’d accompany us for all of the experience. Perhaps I hadn’t read or understood this. I was taken aback, as was my companion.
However, he was unobtrusive, stood back, but was helpful at short cuts, ramps, platform lifts, lifts and location of disabled loos. The only guidance he offered was at the very end, to go see the finale.
We had an amazing 3 hour theatrical performance. I’m always concerned about immersive and Promenade performance. I needn’t have been. It’s dark. Many rooms. Many things to see. Great performance spaces.
It’s a challenge in a chair as I couldn’t follow all the action as it moved from space to space. There were changes of level. Or everyone else rushed off and when I arrived I was at the back and couldn’t see. Even watching from the upper level what was being performed below was difficult because the balcony railing handrail was at eye height in a wheelchair.
Some of the scenes were compelling. Highly theatrical. The movement and music were stunning. Highlights. The disco dancing hip gyrating, the fight on the raised linear stage, the gay seduction, the finale, the prophesy with the antlers in the sand.
Do yourselves a favour and book this immersive experience immediately!
It’s hard to understand what you’re in for but that’s the best way to be honest. You won’t know what hit you. I was confused and super engaged at the same time !
Parts of it reminded me of The Broken Tunes games I used to play as a child. I was separated from the group right from the beginning and had to go solo for a while. Heart was pounding not gonna lie.
I was lucky enough to have a solo experience with one of the performers which was thrilling ♥️♥️ hats off to everyone involved ! Absolutely brilliant !
