Weekend in London

Review of The Gore
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 weeks ago
The elegant Gore Hotel was a respite each day after a busy day sightseeing. My husband and I had an elegant room and a delicious breakfast each morning. The staff were very kind and helpful. They arranged car rides and provided information. They also provided tea in the cozy library. The hotel is located right off Hyde Park. I would recommend this hotel for visitors to London.

Lovely, charming hotel in a great location. The Bar 190 is historic and classy. The Rolling Stones spent some time here. The hotel was once the Turkish Embassy. I liked the old world charm of the place. The bar had excellent cocktails, and was great for pre theater libations. The staff were friendly, professional , and helpful, especially Cristi. He recommended Cafe Momo and Da Mario, both a short walk from the hotel. Both restaurants were excellent, especially Da Mario.

Americans detest hidden fees! Be they Hotels, Restaurants, or Airlines. It was not disclosed to us that they add a “discretionary charge or gratuity” onto our final bill, until I asked for a final copy, and they explained it to me. It was Quite sneaky and in Poor taste. The staff certainly deserved it, but it should be incorporated into their room rates. Great way to alienate customers. Am I in San Francisco?
It was an unpleasant surprise taken directly from the American hospitality play book. They also should include breakfast or make it a more affordable offering. They try to upsell you when you check in, and offer you a discount if you pay ahead. If The Gore wants repeat customers they should be more transparent or upfront. Use an Uber to go to and from London Heathrow , as it is a good value for money, unlike Black taxis, Heathrow Express, or Car Services, especially when a family of three. Black taxis are nice, but a rip off. 30 £ for a 2 .5 mile ride. Absurd. Uber was 11 £.
London is an incredible city. It reminds me of my beloved New York. It is diverse, seemingly tolerant , rich in history, culture , and nightlife. Overall, a great visit and stay.

Room tip: A Car is not needed, obviously.

Dear Robert Y,

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our charming Victorian hotel, the historic Bar 190 and the excellent service provided by our amazing staff, especially Cristian. It is wonderful to know that his recommendations enhanced your dining experience and that you appreciated the rich history and unique charm of our South Kensington location.

However, we are truly sorry to hear about your concerns regarding the discretionary charge and the perceived lack of transparency. We understand how unexpected fees can be frustrating, however, we strive to provide clear communication about all charges and we always strive to adequately convey this to our guests and can only apologise if you felt this was not the case. For clarity; the accommodation service charge at 5% is listed in all our terms & conditions and email confirmations, both directly and through all third-party booking channels. It is also noted on your registration card, which you signed upon check-in. The service charge is a professional practice that is very common-place in the London hotel market and becoming increasingly normal amongst worldwide hotels. The service charge goes fully to the team and is entirely discretionary, should you wish not to incentivise our hardworking team. We shall have no issue whatsoever in removing it. We have made a note on your profile notes, so that in the future, you are not charged any service charges.

Regarding the breakfast pricing and upselling at check-in, we appreciate your suggestions and will consider them as we continuously work to enhance our guest experience. We aim to offer a variety of options to suit different preferences and budgets. We strive to offer helpful and unobtrusive service and we always want to ensure our guest experience the best of our hotel, thus offering them the opportunity to book service such as breakfast, in order to avoid disappointment, as our outlets are extremely popular, as they offer exceptional quality and value!

Thank you for your valuable insights about transportation options as well. It is great to hear that you found our location convenient for exploring London.

We hope you will consider staying with us again, giving us the opportunity to provide an even more seamless and transparent experience.

Warm regards,

J-J Pollak

Upon arrival we were greeted by a cold and unwelcoming staff. When checking in they mentioned a 5% discretionary service charge. I said that I wanted to opt out of that and the woman could not have been more rude. They also try to pressure you into adding on extra meals at checkin, making it feel more like an outlet store than a nice hotel. During the stay their idea of customer service is just asking if you need a taxi as you walk out the door. Despite declining the 5% discretionary charge at check-in, I found it on my bill after paying but needed to leave for the airport so didn't have time to request a manager at checkout. I think it is a fair expectation that the bill would be correct without needing to speak with a manager when leaving.

Room tip: Close to Hyde Park but far from most public transport lines, making getting around the city cumbersome.

Dear AnnonymousM2285TB,

Thank you for sharing the exact same review both on here and Google Reviews. We are genuinely sorry to hear about your disappointing experience at our hotel. Your concerns are taken very seriously and we apologise for the shortcomings you encountered during your stay.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for (what you felt) was an unwelcoming reception you received upon arrival and the rudeness you experienced when addressing the discretionary service charge. This is not reflective of the high standards of service we aim to provide and having reviewed our CCTV, does not appear to be the experience you had either! We will use your feedback as training, however, we do feel your comments are not necessarily fair or reflective of the occurrence.

Additionally, we regret that you felt pressured into additional purchases at check-in and that our customer service did not meet your expectations. We strive to offer helpful and unobtrusive service and we always want to ensure our guest experience the best of our hotel, thus offering them the opportunity to book service such as breakfast, in order to avoid disappointment, as our outlets are extremely popular, as they offer exceptional quality and value!

Regarding the 5% discretionary charge; we appreciate your feedback and will use it as an opportunity to improve our processes, however, the accommodation service charge at 5% is listed in all our terms & conditions and email confirmations, both directly and through all booking channels. We cannot remove it upon check-in, but would have had no issue in removing it on check-out should you have asked; it would not have delayed your check-out. We have made a note on your profile notes, so that in the future, you are not charged any service charges.

We value your feedback and hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to provide you with the excellent service we are known for.

Best regards,

The staff was so lovely & friendly! From helping to call taxis, restaurant suggestions, assisting with luggage and just being overall awesome. George even recognized we had an early tour and would miss breakfast. He had coffee & pastries waiting for us in the lobby to bring on our way. The location is prime, being walking distance from a lot of sites, restaurants and shops. We felt very safe and welcomed here and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel!

Stayed at The Gore many times and it’s always delivered. This time, we thought even more so. The team were all trying really hard to ensure it was a great stay. The hotel gets very busy when there is a big concert at the Albert Hall, but Salvador and the bar & kitchen team handled it exceptionally well and with a big smile. Even the minor hiccup within a very hectic supper service in the bar was handled with appropriate speed and apology. Nothing to fault when the response is like that!

Thank you to everyone at The Gore, you remain our ‘go to’ when we are in London.

(1) The superior room which had been allocated to my mother-in-law was inappropriate and unsafe especially for a 90 year old lady. She experienced difficulty breathing in the airtight loft room, and the staircase was dangerous. She asked for the room to be changed, and was moved to a standard room (but only £15 discount was offered).

(2) When I made the booking by phone, I said that I have registered my mother-in-law to become a member of the star hotels group. I was told on the telephone that, once at the hotel, if we mention this, we should be entitled to receive the membership discount. However, this was refused when arrived at the hotel.

(3) My mother-in-law also told me that the plug in the room didn't work and the taps were difficult to operate.
