Although the Holiday Inn Express in London Southwark is not trying to be a five star hotel, we were still disappointed. When booking, there was no information that the hotel was renovated. And prices were 'normal London prices' for a simple, but not shabby hotel. Upon arrival we noticed the whole hotel was covered in scaffolding and tarpaulin. Good welcome by hotel staff, with prepared key for the room et c, but when arriving to our room it was all dark, as outside our window was working men on the scaffolding. So, it was dark (and honestly very little lighting in the room overall except for bathroom), and workers were stepping just outside our window so farewell romantic start... The drilling machines woke us up at 0845 on Saturday morning. And still could not keep the curtains away for light as the workers were still there. No work on Sunday though! Front desk staff were varying, some very helpful and welcoming, but several times when we got into the lobby from outside, the desk clerk didn't even look up and/or greet us.

Breakfast was good!

Neighborhood area is calm and within very short walking distance to Southwark station which will bring you to The O2 or up to Bond Street within minutes.

Despite an extensive refurb programme, the hotel was working fine and our stay was enjoyable. Great location, minutes from Tate Modern. We had a ground-floor room in the new bit, right near Reception but heard hardly any street noise; comfy big bed and sofa bed made up ready to use if needed. Bathroom looked brand-new and the shower was excellent, powerful and hot. Standard toiletries fine. Reception staff were so polite and helpful and genuinely interested in what our plans were in London. The large bar area was new and the bar drinks reasonable. Breakfast was busy but plenty of staff around; good quality full English available and lots of choice, although the fruit salad had seen better days! A relaxing stay all round and would definitely return.

Clean, comfortable bed, enough towels, even the decorations are fine. Location is in the middle of hotel district and some of the restaurants and pubs were close enough. And even Tate modern, with a great free view from the top floor.
Some issues: too little room on the desk and for the chair for some serious work to be done on a laptop, for instance. Breakfast could use some extra foods, but overall good enough. One of the lifts was out of order during my whole stay so it was quite a walk from the other lift. My room key was really low quality so i needed to push it several times to make it work. I even exchanged it, but it didn't help. The hotel is showing some signs of age, but it is actively being redecorated, so I guess it will help.

Here for a 2 night stay & was very pleased with the location & hotel in general.
We hadn't read any Tripadvisor comments until after booking & when we did check them before our trip,we were worried about the ongoing building work.
We needn't have been because the only visible signs of building work, was part of the hotel covered in 'wrapping' & the entrance in need of attention. No work noise but we were there Saturday,Sunday & Monday.
The breakfast was good but maybe needed another staff member to refill the milk dispenser etc.
Our room,418,was on the 4th floor.A large, quiet room with an excellent shower & plenty of hot water.
The Bar area is very small but we were out both nights so didn't need this.
The hotel is a short walk from the Tate Modern & I walked over the Millennium Bridge to a service in St Paul's in 20 minutes.Spectacular free views from the 10th floor of the Tate & we went up in both daylight & nightime, they are open until 10pm Saturdays.
Buses are easy & very regular from stops under Blackfriars Bridge, going in both directions. The RV1 goes to Waterloo & on to Covent Garden. In the other direction the RV1 goes towards the Tower.
At Waterloo,on York Road, we caught the Golden Tours Hop on Hop Off buses-they stop at many places & are good value.
Coming to the hotel from Euston,we got the 168 bus to Waterloo & then the RV1 & we did the trip in approx 30 minutes.
If we are in London again,we will most likely book this hotel again.

Room tip: Room 418,4th floor at front onto Southwark Road.Very quiet & couldn't hear or see the traffic.

2nd time we stayed here. Great experience both times. Rooms have just been refurbished so look lovely & fresh. Great breakfast. Staff really friendly & helpful.
Only slight criticism is that there is no main light in the room - and so especially with one side of the room painted navy blue, it's really dark in the evenings! However there is a perfect light above the full length mirror which is great for doing makeup - something which I find is often overlooked in hotel rooms so well done to them on that!
There's no plug near any mirror though - they supply a wired-in hairdryer by the mirror so that's fine - but it's a good job my hair was behaving and I didn't need the straighteners on the day I stayed!
Overall, a great stay though!

Dear Sir/Madam

We appreciate your visit at the Holiday Inn Express Southwark and the comments posted thereafter. We noted that you enjoyed the location of the hotel and the convenience to Tube Station as well as the walking distance to Westminster Abbey & Parliament.

I am also very pleased to see that you find our hotel staff be very welcoming, very friendly and very helpful and that you have enjoyed our breakfast. I will certainly share you comments with the rest of the team who will be delighted to hear that their efforts have been recognized.

It is regretful that the lights were not at satisfactory level in the bedroom and please accept my sincerest apologies. We have forwarded this complaint to our maintenance manager and we are certainly working towards correcting this matter.

Wishing you safe and enjoyable journeys and our best wishes for the New Year.

Kind Regards,
