Recommended by a friend, a group of work colleagues visited Jamal's to celebrate (?) one person leaving : (
The staff couldn't have been more considerate and helpful, especially as our booking number kept changing - Jamal's is very small, but really nice because of that.
In the end, there were just 10 of us around the table and service was efficient and friendly. Some had starters others just kept nibbling on the popadoms. We all got our main course in a short space of time (none of that awkward waiting for the last person to be served) Excellent range of food served, all enjoyed our meals - good sized portions and very little left over!
Jamal's is unlicensed - we actually knew that but had forgotten, so a couple of the guys nipped over to Tesco and bought a load of Cobra. (a number of us were driving so sticking to water was actually a better solution)
We had a really good time, the food was great and I'll definitely be going back.

Definitely one of the best curries I have eaten. Starter was paneer... good portion of cheese in a tomato garlic sand onion sauce. Rich and tasty, the perfect introduction for the main course... fish masala and garlic naan. I had mine in the Asian style, with a little extra warmth. The chef created an excellent fine balance, the heat did not destroy the sauce or the delicate fish. Two of us ate well with drinks for £30 which is great value too.

I was staying in Leicester for a weekend as part of a group of 4 friends. It was Saturday night and we were seeking a restaurant for a curry. We turned up on spec at Jamal's at around 9.30pm and although on first view from the outside it looked chocker full, I went in and asked if there was any likelihood of a table for 4 becoming available. I was informed by Sara, the manager, that a group of regular customers would be leaving in the next 5 minutes and as soon as they left, we could be accommodated. She went on to say that the restaurant did not have a license to sell alcohol but that we could bring drinks in with us and suggested that if we wished to, we could take a walk around the corner to Tesco to buy some drinks and by the time we returned a table would be ready for us. We did as Sara had suggested and true enough, by the time we returned, approx 10 minutes later, a table for 4 had been prepared and was awaiting our arrival.

We were greeted and seated in a friendly and efficient manner, despite the rest of the restaurant being busy. I was impressed by the fact that despite being extremely busy, we were not overlooked and were kept informed as to expected timescales throughout. Our orders were taken within 10 minutes of being seated and our food followed swiftly, freshly cooked to order and served in very hot metal bowls (we were warned about the heat of the bowls!) The food was presented nicely and was tasty. Very little was left by the end of the meal which tells you that we were hungry and that we enjoyed our food.

The interior of the restaurant was far from typical, it was quite modern decor with a predominant black and white colour scheme. You enter the restaurant directly from the high street but it was another of our party who observed that the informality of the atmosphere made our experience akin to being a guest in the owners parlour rather than a diner in a restaurant. This made for a more pleasurable experience and definitely added to our enjoyment. Even a large and vocal party of ladies at the other side of the restaurant did not detract from us enjoying our stay.

By the time we had finished it was nearing 11pm and it was clear that the restaurant was preparing to close for the evening but we were not rushed to leave and were allowed to depart when we were ready to do so. We were presented with a bill which was not only reasonable for a city restaurant but which also represented very good value for what we had ordered. Upon leaving, we thanked our hosts for accommodating us - and Sara - here is the review I promised you!

A general note to anyone like us...who are visiting Leicester for the first time...and who don't know the city very well...and who are wishing to have a curry...you could do a lot worse than to learn from our experience. On our first night (Friday), we went in search of a curry around 11pm, only to find that most Indian restaurants that we could find were either already closed or were closing by that time. We found it incredible that it did not seem possible to be able to get a curry after 11pm in a major multicultural city which is home to a large student population. We'd never come across that before - so take heed others and learn from our experience. But if you are seeking a decent curry in Leicester, you could benefit from our experience and pay an enjoyable visit to Jamal's.

Thank Boycs1

This was our third visit to Jamals. Each time we have enjoyed good food, excellent service and a bill that is far less than you would pay in more upmarket establishments. The food is superb. It really is of the highest quality and each dish is prepared individually with the flavour adjusted to your taste. Biryani is wonderful as is the mixed grill, the tika dishes and the nan bread is perfect. Bring your own alcohol as the family are devout Muslims. For a lovely meal in a small family restaurant, Jamals cannot be beaten. But shhhhhh...don't tell too many as I want to makes sure all the tables are not booked up on a Saturday evening.

Went here with my son
Very bright restaurant very well decorated
Received a great and warm welcome as we entered
The staff were very friendly and helpful and really knew their menu and dishes. Explained how the dishes were cooked and asked if they could be changed to meet our tastes
The food was simply superb. Have to say one of the best curries I’ve eaten. The balance of spice flavour and heat was spot on
Very reasonable price too
They don’t have a license so pop into Tesco for a beer or wine
Will definitely go back
