Owner description: Established in 1854. Grasmere Gingerbread was invented in 1854 by Victorian creator cook Sarah Nelson who mixed and baked her spicy-sweet chewy concoction inside her neat Church Cottage home - now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop - and sold it to villagers and visitors from a table top on a tree stump outside her front door. One hundred and sixty years after the creation and launch of Grasmere Gingerbread, Sarah Nelson's remarkable, unique legacy lives. Her wonderful spicy-sweet cross between a biscuit and cake enjoys a worldwide following and it is still baked fresh every day to her original secret recipe inside her former home, now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop.

This hidden little gem smells amazing and the staff were friendly . Unfortunately no gluten free options but enjoyed visiting and buying presents!

I was only 25 miles away, near Carnforth. The shop was open for another hour and I was on my motorbike, so the journey was going to be fun. How could I resist?
As ever, the shop and staff are delightful, and the gingerbread, which is unlike any other gingerbread, is "to die for".
If you are close to Grasmere, this is a must do, the only question is how much to buy!

I didn't know what to expect. Had to queue - so initially thought there must be crowds inside. Turns out the tiny shop can actually take two people! However, the wait wasn't that long, and the inside is quaint and traditional. The gingerbread is wonderful. They have this amazing secret recipe - and basically stick to what they are good at. Not loads of choice - just their excellent product in a few different forms. I like that kind of simplicity. Great service too.
