“fabulous accomodation in a peaceful location”

The property is nestled between Lorton and Cockermouth, in beautiful quiet countryside. Arrived to run the Keswick trail race with two friends and had a great time. We landed on Saturday afternoon and were lucky to have glorious weather for most of our stay (until Tuesday). The accommodation itself was top class, with good quality furnishings, comfortable bedrooms and a patio with lovely views to the hills. We were staying in Buttermere house . The owner, Marna, left a fabulous box of organic goodies, vegetables, some locally produced organic beer and bars of chocolate! The kitchen was well supplied and the shower wet room /bathroom area is of a high standard. All areas were extremely clean. It was evident a lot of effort has gone into thinking about the layout and keeping the accommodation as ecologically friendly as possible .Marna gave us suggestions to explore the local villages and directions as well as providing an information folder in the house regarding whats on in the area.
Marna has put considerable effort into making the area ecologically sustainable, attracting birds, bees and wildlife and growing beautiful plants and grasses. There is even a large pond, teeming with wildlife including more tadpoles than we have ever seen! We chose not to swim in the pond so not to disturb them although Marna advised we could take a dip. The properties are isolated and peaceful, the only noise we heard was the sound of birds and occasionally a tractor! Keswick is approximately an 8 mile drive away either by a relatively flat road or alternatively over the hills, the latter a particularly scenic drive. Cockermouth Village is approx 2 miles away and easy to walk to.

Overall we would highly recommend this property. It is clean, peaceful and set in beautiful and well maintained gardens surrounded by lovely countryside.

Liked best: sitting in the garden and walking round the larger gardens up the hill to sit and watch the sunset
Liked least: struggling to think of anything maybe just the towels as they were abit hard ! Not sure if theres a green way of keeping them soft

“A wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 11 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

'Buttermere' is a spacious and comfortable unit with wide views to fells and fields. It is provided with all items necessary for one's stay. It is actually designed to afford ease of use by someone in a wheel-chair, and although we do not have such a need, we appreciate the accommodation all on one floor. It is also eco-friendly, with recycling and energy economy opportunities.
'Southwaite Green' is a beautiful and peaceful place where you can spend a happy day just 'pottering', but is also within reach of lakes, fells, the sea-side and the pleasant town of Cockermouth.
We have spent several holidays staying here, together with members of our family, including Jazz the dog.
And we hope this won't be our last.

“An amazingly beautiful place to stay...”
Reviewed 23 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Southwaite Green is brilliantly situated to explore the Lake District and surrounding attractions. There's wildlife everywhere; we managed to spot Hares, Barn owls and even Deer! The barns are converted to a really high standard and were cosy and comfortable, with great washing and drying facilities which came in handy for the wet gear. The setting is secluded and private but only a short car journey away from towns like Cockermouth if you need to nip out and do some shopping or have a great meal out at one of the many pubs, like The Bitter End which has some great Cumbrian ales!
Our host, Marna, made us feel really welcome as did the hamper of fresh organic vegetables, local beer and plum bread which greeted us on our arrival.
Overall, it couldn't have been better, we found a real gem here and there weren't enough hours in the day to enjoy it!

“A beautiful cottage!”

We arrived to find a box of organic vegetables waiting for us, sheep grazing quietly next to the cottage, and a beautiful, recently refurbished cottage with lots of space, very high ceilings, airy and bright, with a patio to eat on under the stars. We all felt immediately uplifted and delighted by how lovely the space was. Everything we needed was there. A great base from which to venture out into the surrounding country, and a lovely, homely place to come back to after a hard day's hiking. Highly recommended.

“Fantastic accomodation in beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 9 November 2011 for a stay in October 2011

Had a wonderful time here - loved the open plan of the accomodation. Would definitely go again as the setting and surrounding area will need many more visits to fully explore everything there is to see and do.
Highly recommended for children as was lovely to have them run around freely and explore and be muddy!
