“An amazingly beautiful place to stay...”
Reviewed 23 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Southwaite Green is brilliantly situated to explore the Lake District and surrounding attractions. There's wildlife everywhere; we managed to spot Hares, Barn owls and even Deer! The barns are converted to a really high standard and were cosy and comfortable, with great washing and drying facilities which came in handy for the wet gear. The setting is secluded and private but only a short car journey away from towns like Cockermouth if you need to nip out and do some shopping or have a great meal out at one of the many pubs, like The Bitter End which has some great Cumbrian ales!
Our host, Marna, made us feel really welcome as did the hamper of fresh organic vegetables, local beer and plum bread which greeted us on our arrival.
Overall, it couldn't have been better, we found a real gem here and there weren't enough hours in the day to enjoy it!

“A beautiful cottage!”

We arrived to find a box of organic vegetables waiting for us, sheep grazing quietly next to the cottage, and a beautiful, recently refurbished cottage with lots of space, very high ceilings, airy and bright, with a patio to eat on under the stars. We all felt immediately uplifted and delighted by how lovely the space was. Everything we needed was there. A great base from which to venture out into the surrounding country, and a lovely, homely place to come back to after a hard day's hiking. Highly recommended.

“Fantastic accomodation in beautiful surroundings”
Reviewed 9 November 2011 for a stay in October 2011

Had a wonderful time here - loved the open plan of the accomodation. Would definitely go again as the setting and surrounding area will need many more visits to fully explore everything there is to see and do.
Highly recommended for children as was lovely to have them run around freely and explore and be muddy!

“Eco Holidays for the Disabled and their families”
Reviewed 24 October 2011 for a stay in October 2011

This is a peaceful location but with much to do locally for those who wish it.
Buttermere offered good space for either wheelchair or walking aids. The underfloor heating ensured that every corner of the property was warm and welcoming, even after being out on a wet Lake District day.
It is good to have carefully sourced fittings, fixtures and household goods.
The range and simplicity of recycling demonstrates what is possible when you have space and a willing local authority.
The planning and planting of the site will only mature as the years go by.

“Guilt free luxury in the Lake District”
Reviewed 10 October 2011 for a stay in September 2011

We have stayed before and enjoyed ourselves again in this idyllic setting in the Lake District.
Marna has achieved an amazing balance of providing very high quality accomodation in an environmentally protective space, which just happens to be so so beautiful.
This time we stayed in Buttermere, as it is all on one level. Delighfully airy and spacious, superbly equipped (even for an adventurous cook) and really comfortable beds and bedding.
This time we decided not to drive too far on our days out and were delighted with the splendid scenery and amenities so near to Southwate Green. It was lovely to see how the grounds, grasslands, orchards etc have matured, and the "spiritual" feel of the place is very grounding.
Had some lovely meals at The Pheasant Inn in Bassenthwaithe, and the Kirkstile Inn provided a cosy lunch time venue follwing one of our easier walks at Loweswater.
We will be back.
