A very good Christmas three day stay.

Review of The Alfriston
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 27 Dec 2023
This is the fourth time we have spent Christmas at Deans Place, we are welcomed as friends and as with all residents are treated really well. We had really good food and a comfortable room. My wife and I are vegetarian and also alcohol free as well as my being diabetic. The food was provided sympathetically to meet our requirements and the choice of wines was also exceptionally good. We will certainly be returning in 2023.

A very pleasant setting despite local area flooding. A place in need of a bit of TLC but the rooms & staff great. Room was the right size for me with all appliances working. Quiet & a comfortable bed. The staff were most helpful at all times. Meals a little variable & service similarly. However when part of a group this really didn't matter. Would I stay again - definitely yes!

Great welcome, upgraded us to rooms 23 & 24 overlooking the gardens - although flooded by recent rainfalls, the view was stunning and teaming with wildlife. Amazing warm spacious rooms, the bathroom will soon warm up once the hugely fluffy towels are removed from radiator / towel heater. 24 has lovely William Morris wall paper and recently refurbished. Food amazing, wonderfully presented and tasty including breakfast. 6 foot wide beds, cotton bedding. Pillows are not feather but we travel with our own! Thank you!

Room tip: There’s no lift but very helpful staff available to carry luggage

This was the second time I stayed at the hotel. On the first occasion I had to change rooms due to the noise from the bar music speakers. The room they then gave me was near some loud equipment or machinery which kept me awake.
This second visit was worse. First room suffered from loud whistling noises, probably from the plumbing. I changed room again but the next had some sort of machinery (a pump of some description) in the roof space above the bed. Kept me awake until after 3am.
Bathroom very cold, and shower lukewarm at best.
The best part of my stay was leaving.

My 5th visit this year- says it all really! The main feature of this lovely old hotel is the staff, all them, nothing is too much for any of them - whatever their role. A torch for a night time walk to the village or a late night snack after the theatre! ( booked in advance!)
Totally agree with all other positive comments and I’ll be back for Christmas!!

We arrived later than would have liked, way after dark and the lovely lady on reception (Michaella) took pity on us, giving us an upgrade on our room. As we don't know what the original would have been like, we can't compare. However, the following morning, the view out over the Cuckmere valley was worth whatever the other was like.
The area has suffered awful flooding recently, so the views of the garden, beneath quite a considerable depth of water were rather spoiled, but we were warm and dry indoors for the whole event.
My wife found the bed a little too firm for her liking, but I loved it and it was huge!
The food we ate was wonderful at the association dinner, the drinks bar was wonderfully stocked with a huge choice, the snack menu in the evening was just right, with a choice for all pallets and the Full English breakfast on the day we left was perfect and saw us all the way home. This time in daylight!
    Lovely place to stay!

Room tip: Don't travel after dark in the middle of winter, it's a bit of a nightmare on the narrow, flooded roads, but generally, it's a lovely place.
