“Not much to see but interesting history”
Review of Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings

Plenty of information on boards so you can visualise how this monument would have been used in the past.

Not too much to see so an hour at the most would cover everthing.

A 2min walk from Brewery Square, these are the remains of an Iron Age henge monument later converted by the Romans into an amphitheater and much later still fortified during the English Civil War. There are a few interpretation panels explaining history of site. Well worth seeing if at or near Brewery Square or the nearby car parks.

Had driven past on several occasions without realising what was there. A large ring that has been used for various entertainments over the centuries and is stiill used now for events. Several displays help to explain its history.

This site, close to the station and near the centre of Dorchester, has quite a history behind it. Originally build as an hill fort, rather smaller than Maiden Castle about 1.5 miles further out of town, it was converted into an amphitheatre during the Roman period, who added an extra entrance/exit. Although now overgrown with grass, one cas still spot hints of the lines of seats. During the civil war the site was yet again used, now as a fort against the royalist troops. However, it never saw battle, as the town surrendered before there could be any battle. Now a lovely green area, very quiet, where one can wander around. There are some information panels on site detailing the history.

This is a wonderful piece of history that should be better known. The ancient ring has been used for many things over the years, Roman amphitheater, Civil War fort, public execution space. Has some new, and quite good information panels, and, it is free. Definitely worth 30 minutes of your time. No sign of the marijuana smoking teenagers, pity, I could have done with a toke.
