Review of Maumbury Rings

Maumbury Rings
Reviewed 31 December 2017

The Maumbury Rings wouldn’t be at all interesting if it were not for the information notices around. The provided fascinating facts and theories as to the various uses of the area over the centuries.

It was a good area to exercise the dog off lead too.

The Rings are very near to the main Car Park in Dorchester and an easy walk. They are very well preserved and there are good explanation boards throughout. There are no restrictions to wandering and when you realise that this was a Roman entertainment place it is very easy to visualise. A great place for the kids to play at putting on a show or just to run around. Also good place for a picnic.

A nice walk, revealed the Maumbury rings. An ancient earth works with a potted history. If you like to look at this sort of thing, then it well worth a visit, see also the Roman House, and the town walls walk.

If you're visiting Dorchester as a tourist, most likely you'll park at Fairfield. The Maumbury Rings is just over the road. It's fascinating to see the juxtaposition between this ancient Neolothic monument (roughly contemporary with Stonehenge) and the modern workaday world. The property is sensitively maintained.

This is an amazing piece of history on the main road into Dorchester from Weymouth. Driven past it many times over the years, but for the first time ever stopped to explore it. There are 3 information boards which give an informative history of this area. It is a touch of tranquillity in the midst of daily bustle. Well worth a small detour. Parking in the market car park opposite.
