Visited Chine hotel 17th to 21st May 2021. A fine three star hotel. Well appointed large spacious rooms pleasantly furnished and ensuite. food excellent staff very polite and helpful smartly presented. Only down side no porterage due to covid regs. Situated right on sea front with easy access to shopping cetre and road train along front very cheap. Large gardens Very pleasant stay highly recommended.

Room tip: All rooms are excellent.

The Chine Hotel is a hotel in a great location, but falls below the standard I'd expect from the price they charge for the rooms.

It's a short walk downhill to the shorefront and to Boscombe pier, which is far quieter than the beaches further towards the main Bournemouth pier which is about a 25 minute walk along the promenade.

Parking is a bit of a nightmare. There's very limited off-road parking which is dispersed around the hotel buildings. You'll have to be very lucky to get one of these spots at busy times and don't be surprised if it's at an odd angle or tucked away. There's about half a dozen bays outside the hotel entrance itself - including a couple of disabled spots; another dozen or so by the west wing building and a further half dozen behind the main building. If you aren't lucky enough to get one of these then you'll have to park on the road but these spots are also fairly limited.

The main hotel building itself is fairly well kept inside, albeit a little dated. Unfortunately, the room we were given isn't in the main building but inside the west wing instead which is a separate building. This building doesn't have the same attention - it's even more dated, very creaky and smells a bit musky.

The room itself was a good size. We asked for a garden view and got it - the sea can be seen from the room and it overlooked part of the garden and the outdoor pool.

The bed was terrible. It was meant to be a double bed but really was two singles pushed together with a double sheet put on top. The springs could be felt like daggers. I'm honestly not sure where they found the beds or how old the mattresses were, but it was not hotel quality at all.

The bathroom was OK, but again quite dated. There was a shaver socket, and a shower over bath. The shower spewed brown water for the first couple of minutes it was on and the shower head was disgusting. I needed to clean all the limescale off it before water would come out of most of the nozzles. The water pressure was good though and there was no issue with the temperature either.

The room was stuffy at night over a warm weekend. No air-conditioning and the windows only opened about 6 inches. The floorboards were squeaky and must have driven the people downstairs mad. The room came with tea/coffee facilities and the usual toiletries. There wasn't an iron, but housekeeping were able to provide one with a call to reception.

No idea the spa or sauna were any good because they were closed - could be to do with COVID but I'm not sure. The outdoor pool was also closed for maintenance on our first day, but we didn't use either pool in the end because you needed to book an hour's slot when you arrive, and we needed the flexibility. Again, not sure if that was to do with COVID or not.

Breakfast was fairly standard. Nothing exceptional but perfectly adequate and what you might expect: full English, cereals, toast, selection of juices. We didn't use the restaurant or bar otherwise.

All in all, a fairly dated hotel and not what I'd expect for the amount paid (>£200 a night). I will look elsewhere for my next visit to Bournemouth.

The Chine is a large, comfy-bed hotel with a good space The Chine is a large, comfy-bed hotel with a good space once your inside the room. The bathroom needs a little work and while everything was clean and tidy, an old sliding bathroom door didn’t close properly and the shower unit/head was over-sized which resulted in it falling out of position constantly. i.e. You pretty much had to hold it up for it to work. Generally though, the staff were friendly and the location is a nice one, maybe a bit on the edge of all the other hotels you see along the front but – in truth – no complaints as we checked that out beforehand.

The only disappointment was that we were hoping to leave our luggage for the day, it was the Bournemouth Marathon and my other half was running it. However, because they’re now closed for a while, we were informed we couldn’t and that was that. So whilst I spend the day pushing/pulling around suitcases and bags, there’s no luggage places in Bournemouth for storage, please someone open one, but it would have been helpful to have some guidance on any other options, or other Hotels, we could have used. Oh, didn't use to any of the mentioned facilities though, as they were also closing them early.

Breakfast was decent enough, it wouldn’t be worth £13.50 though as it’s machine coffee and self-serve, but was luckily included with the room. These are all extras though, the bed was super comfy and that always helps me, just disappointed I couldn’t explore the town due to the above reasons but… my other half did finish her first marathon and on our first visit! So that’s good, isn’t it?

Dear Dan B - thank you for your comments on the location and staff - they are all delighted. And well done to your wife - what an achievement - the marathon weekend is so much fun. We do close for the winter and there has to be a point where we start to wind down - hope that you will come again and perhaps for a more relaxing (certainly for you wife!) time earlier in the season and use the swimming pools, jacuzzi, gym etc - congratulations again.
Kind regards.
