“"A Room with a View ? - NO, Superb Rooms with Spectacular Views - and a Balcony; can't be bettered"”
Reviewed 16 August 2011 for a stay in July 2011

We have just returned – fully relaxed and suntanned (and a bit heavier than when we arrived!) – from our 2 week holiday at Harbour Heights. This is our 4th since 2007 which we think sets the scene of satisfaction.

Harbour Heights is set high up on Jawbones Hill on the Dartmouth (west) side of the River Dart so the sunlight streams into the rooms from dawn until about 2pm (in July anyway). Lying in a comfortable bed watching Dartmouth come to life is a luxurious way to start the day; except for the odd rainy day we always had breakfast on the balcony – patio style chairs and tables sensibly provided – and time passing until we noticed the Church clock striking the hour, closely followed by Britannia Royal Naval College clock striking 4 bells – or was that 8 bells? Back to the well equipped kitchen to make a pot of tea and sift through the many Visitors guides and local Magazines to see where to go for lunch. Dartmouth is not short of excellent and varied restaurants and it is not difficult to eat in a different one every day – we found it best to book, especially for evening meals but just popping in at lunchtime to check out the catch of the day and asking for a table seems to work. We haven’t had a bad meal (or a bad wine) in any of them. Even the occasional Cornish Pasty tastes better than usual when we munch away at the quayside watching the world float by.

Ann Buckingham’s directions to Harbour Heights emphasises not following your GPS…….she is right! So do follow her written directions and don’t be too alarmed at the width and steepness of the approach. There is off road parking for one car at the house (we understand that the drive will be widened for 2012 but meanwhile watch your exhaust pipe!). Parking on the road is not recommended unless you are absolutely sure of your handbrake and also the Traffic Warden is very enthusiastic about her job. Unloading the car is simple – from the boot to the house is 3 metres and all at the same level, and the first thing that you will notice when you open the front door is the view across the river and the second thing that you will notice is how clean everything is (maybe the third thing is the seagull chorus welcoming you but that just adds to the atmosphere). As the house is built on a steep hillside there are of course stairs down to some of the bedrooms and bathrooms but there are also bedrooms and bathrooms on the entrance level for those less able. Once you have sorted out the arguments of who is going to sleep where, pressed all the buttons and explored the house and garden you will always be drawn back to the balcony – for us it is the major plus point of the holiday, a 3D Imax spectacular, seemingly never repeating itself and plays in any weather for you personally. Anne provides a couple of small pairs of binoculars but if you have a spotting scope or a set of observation glasses, or just a good camera and telephoto lens, we would recommend finding room to take them.

Dartmouth town is compact but has enough shops to satisfy most people – the walk down is easy, the walk back is ……less easy, especially not recommended after a good meal, but taxis are available and are remarkably cheap (about £2.30 on most days) – its also a bit of fun seeing if they can drive you up to the top of Jawbones Hill without stopping – or meeting someone, or something, coming down (We were once confronted by a 10 year old on a skate board – he must have been doing 30 miles an hour…)

We mentioned that the sun shines on the house until about 2pm - we were glad of the cooler afternoon and could then enjoy the view of sunlit Kingswear on the other side of the river - from the balcony of course. We nearly always made plans to do something the next day, a boat trip to Totnes for example, or Greenway to visit Agatha Christies house, a walk to the Castle and boat ride back, Paignton on the Steam Train, Topsham Antique Centre, Coleton Fishacre (if you like gardens this is a must visit and just across the river)………but the plans were usually thwarted by the spectacle of people simply messing about in boats.

To sum up – Ann has got this house just right, this is a superb example of what a Holiday, a Holiday let and a Holiday Host should be, we are always slightly reluctant to leave, and as we said, we are more than happy to keep coming back. It may not be the cheapest but it certainly ranks among the very best of its type that is available - we would say - in the whole of the UK.

“Amazing Views and a perfect holiday for large group of friends or family”
Reviewed 7 August 2011 for a stay in May 2011

We've been to Harbour Heights 3 times now and absolutely love it! The views are amazing and Harbour Heights is a great house to rent for just a weekend or a full week with either friends or family. It makes a perfect holiday if you have children and you are minutes away from the town of dartmouth and a small drive to many lovely beaches. I would definitely recommend it to anyone I know and we are already booking for next year. Ann ensures that the place is always clean and tidy for when you arrive and you can always get a food shop delivery before you arrive!

“Absolutely fantastic - couldn't have dreamt of better”
Reviewed 21 July 2011 for a stay in July 2011

We searched high and low for a perfect place to have a get together - and we certainly found it at harbour heights. Ann was so helpful before our visit getting back to us so quickly and sending us some suggestions of things to do and the local paper with upcoming events. Ann made us all feel very welcome and left us to settle in.
The house is stunning, the view is breathtaking and everything is even better than the pictures - we only wish we could have stayed for longer to just sit and enjoy it. It has everything you need and so much useful stuff - tv, sound system not to mention every item of crockery and cooking utensil there is - my friend, a chef, was in heaven.
Thank you for such a memorable stay - we hope to be back soon!

“It has the WOW factor”

I have stayed at Harbour Heights on many occasions now, and I am still simply overwhelmed by the view that is so breath taking and grabbs you the minute you enter this lovely house. It is so difficult to take your eyes away from the window or to just stand on the deck to feast your eyes. The house itself is so pefect for large groups yet cosy enough for just a couple. It is extremely well equipped. and has everything you would expect in such a fabulous house. It is not over fussy, very clean, comfortable and homely, I hope to make many more return journeys to this beautiful place. Some great restauarants in the area as well.

“Amazing views and a great house”

Great house with everything you need, amazing views over the harbour, especially at night. Good location for exploring beautiful bits of the coastline and Ann was very helpful with ideas of where to walk and eat.
