“Great lunch”

The Old Bicycle Shop
Ranked #147 of 766 Restaurants in Cambridge
Description: In 2013, a much-loved Cambridge institution closed its doors after 173 years’ trading. Howes Cycles claimed to be the oldest bicycle shop in the country and rumour has it that Charles Darwin, famed for his ‘Theory of Evolution’, bought a bike from this shop in the 1800s. Fast forward a century or two and you’ll now find this quaint old building has a new lease of life – as a bar and restaurant, with a quirky interior designed to celebrate the heritage of the original shop. Saddles and handlebars have been cleverly designed as wall art and everywhere you look, bicycle parts have been fashioned into ornaments or table lamps. Open all day for brunch, lunch and dinner, The Old Bicycle Shop provides a unique setting for all sorts of occasions, from a quick coffee and brunch to a special dinner with friends. We take pride in serving fresh, locally-sourced food for all tastes, with plenty of tempting choices for the vegetarians and vegans among you.

Had a lovely lunch for two at the Old Bicycle Shop. There’s a mellow, hipster vibe, with tasteful decor and friendly staff. We had a nice table in the corner, although the layout meant there were no dud tables. There is also a small outdoor terrace at the back which we thought would be nice in summer. Free bottles of tap water arrived promptly. We are both meat eaters, but happened to choose vegan dishes: the shared plate for starter, then I had the Chana masala (a curried, chickpea soup) and Mrs E had a salad. Food was delicious. It’s not cheap, but not too expensive either (starters £6-£8 and mains £11-£20). Drinks were reasonably priced. Given the overall experience, it feels like good value. Other reviews mention slow service, but we didn’t experience that. All round, a great lunch.

We went here after some deliberation and struggling to get a booking at another popular restaurant. It was after all the first day of Freshers week!

The venue was very "rustic" in its appearance but it was rather charming, service was prompt and polite, no visits to ask the seemingly compulsory question "is everything okay?" Yet I saw the waitress discreetly check that our food was being eaten, (not that discreet then ;) but at least no bloody annoying questions!)

If you are vegan, vegetarian, or have gluten issues this is the place for you. However dedicated carnivores have less choice than they might like but meat is on the menu just not much of it. Seafood does get a look in but not extensive.

The food was excellent and just as ordered, place was clean and tidy and there is a tiny outside area at the rear for hot summer days.

I didn't give this 5 out of 5 as the ambient music was less background ambient and more predominately irritation. A gentle turn of the volume knob towards a lower number would have fixed that. Also the menu range was limited and appeared to focusing in on vegans.

We met friends for an impromptu lunch, and thankfully they had space. I chose the goat's cheese orzo pasta dish (pictured), the boys chose the posh kebab (pictured), and another had lamb rump. My goat's cheese dish was amazing! Very tasty! I polished the lot. The boys really liked their kebabs. Unfortunately the lamb rump was rare and which put off the diner especially as she found a hair in her dish too. When this was pointed out the manager was very apologetic, asked if she wanted anything else off the menu on them, and also if ours were ok. We couldn't fault their service. I would recommend however that diners are notified that the lamb is served very pink, or that you give the option to the dinners of how cooked it is. Personally I would go back, however I know my friend won't. Thank you
