“Lovely place in a great village”

We've stayed in Castletownshend many times but first time at 10 The Lawn (previously in cottages associated with the Castle). This was so much better in every way. Delightful house - clean, well equipped and with a lovely airy feel to it. No hesitation to recommend it. Next time, we'll bring the family.
Only downside was the absence of wifi. That just meant I had to pop down to the pub more often!

We travelled from Spain with our 3 young children and despite the fact that the village really is off the beaten track, we were sincerely taken aback by how beautifully fitted out and stocked the house was on arrival. The owners had left a very thoughtful welcome gift of a bottle of wine to boot.

Our first impression was excellent. Clean, beautifully furnished and splendidly stocked. We had everything you could possibly need for the holiday. Basic provisions to survive until we could make it to the local shops in Skibbereen. Neighbouring occupants were lovely and we even made a few friends.

The photos in no way do the property justice. The location could not have been more fitting for a family with young children as there is a well-kept sports field just in front of the house, (goal posts and nets) where our 3 kids practically spent every waking moment playing football, hurling, rugby, etc. with the local children who were a lovely bunch and very welcoming.

“Lovely house in a beautiful location”
Reviewed 5 June 2013 for a stay in May 2013

As a first time visitor to the Republic of Ireland I had a really pleasant surprise that exceeded all my expectations. Cork is about an hour and a half from Manchester airport and Castletownshend is about the same or less in a hire car. If you see how chipped and scratched the hire cars become in a short time you will realise why they are worth every penny and don't skimp on the insurance!

The house itself is a delight being modern, nicely decorated and well maintained by the owners who were there to greet us and explain how to operate the tv, heating etc. There are no hidden extras and, for the area, this rental is well priced. It is situated in a modern mini-village that was purpose built in green belt land at the top of the village main street. The terraced house has parking for two cars at the front although it would be easy to park more close by. Inside the house was newly decorated and felt fresh. The floors throughout are lacquered pine with rugs but as this is not an area for stiletto heels it shouldn't be a problem. The hall leads into a large lounge/diner which is nicely furnished and has seating for 7 or eight people. The kitchen area is tucked away around a corner and is fully equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, cooker, dishwasher and washing machine. It is compact but we managed to successfully prepare a meal for eight without too much trouble. Outside is a small walled garden which is quite a good sun trap and has the usual table and chairs.
Also downstairs and off the hall is a shower room/toilet with air heater and electric shower whilst upstairs is a bathroom/toilet. There are three bedrooms of reasonable size, the first is a children's room with bunk beds, the second, at the rear of the property, has a double and a single and the third, which we chose, has a double which we found very comfortable. All the rooms are nicely furnished and have plenty of room for clothes, cases etc. Heating upstairs is from individual convector heaters which proved effective. Downstairs there is underfloor heating which works to a limited degree because of the pine floor boards but there is a lovely fireplace if you hit a cold spell. We didn't need any of it once we had warmed the house through.

The village itself is largely centred around one steep street which leads down to a harbour front. You might manage a pushchair but a wheelchair would be extremely difficult. It is not an area for the infirm. Having said that the village and surrounding area is extremely popular in the yachting season so book early if it is for the summer. There is a lovely restaurant/inn about two thirds of the way down. It isn't cheap, (about £100 for a full three course meal for two with a bottle of wine but you can dine there for a lot less). The people are really friiendly, generally charming and relaxed.

Any real shopping needs a car ride to the nearest town and we found the supermarket prices reasonable, the parking easy and the quality good.

The nearest real beach is approximately two miles away but the walk there is punctuated with stunning views and glimpses of some very expensive property. Don't expect the white sand of Mexico or Cuba as the local stone is a very pretty shale and it is the Atlantic, but other than that it is very pretty. Even in May we were able to sunbathe and, although it really is the Emerald Isle for a reason, we enjoyed good weather throughout our stay.

Finally, I will probably be returning next year and my first choice will be to try and rent the same house again.
