“Incredibly Beautiful!”

The Butchart Gardens
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: These internationally acclaimed floral display gardens and National Historic Site of Canada started over 100 years ago and remain privately owned by the family. Jennie Butchart wanted to make her husband's depleted limestone quarry look better and the result is the Sunken Garden. Other gardens include the Rose Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Italian Garden. The gardens are meticulously maintained and provide a riot of colour for much of the year. During the summer, special lighting subtly illuminates the gardens, musical entertainment takes place on the Concert Lawn, and there are ten spectacular Saturday night Firework Shows. The Magic of Christmas season also has beautiful lighting and evening entertainment, and an outdoor skating rink. Spring offers hundreds of thousand flowering bulbs and Autumn is the time for dahlias, chrysanthemums and fall colours. The Gardens is open daily, year round.

Our visit to this lovely garden absolutely lived up to the hype. I will tell you that my experience and that of my 20 year old daughter were vastly different since, not being much of a fan of flowers or pastoral beauty, her favorite part of the experience was the gift shop! I would have spent more than the 3 hours we did wandering around soaking it all up had she appreciated it more, but it was quite a warm day when we were there, so it was a decent amount of time. It's a measure of how captivating I found the rose garden that I spent a great deal of time there in the heat of the day, despite being, as my daughter says, a sun wimp. The colors and scents were amazing, and really so many places were just drenched in beauty; it was just everywhere one looked. The Japanese garden was cool and tranquil and a nice contrast to the riot of color elsewhere. We ate at the cafeteria, which wasn't exceptional, but wasn't awful either, and the environment was lovely there as well. Just so glad we went!

Visiting Butchart Gardens was probably the highlight of our recent trip to Vancouver Island to stay with friends in Sidney. We visited late afternoon in the hope that it wouldn't be too busy and it was just about OK. The layout of the gardens is spectacular, easy to walk along paths and a huge variety of flowers, shrubs and trees. My favourites in June were the Stocks, Roses and geraniums, but I'm sure that whatever time of year you are able to visit there will be much to see. A must see if you are on the island. As our visit was only for a few hours, we didn't eat at any of the restaurants or cafes, so I can't comment on these.

The gardens are beautiful especially the Sunken Garden. We were there from 11am to 3pm two days ago. It was so crowded & some of the tourists are quite rude. Some people yanked the flowers apart to take closed up pictures. Some (grown up adults) climbed on a horse sculpture to take pictures & behaving like children. Some hogged the nice places to take pictures & acting like divas & refusing to let other people went by. Some used selfie sticks despite the garden rules stating “no selfie sticks allowed.”

The food at The Blue Poppy Restaurant & The Coffee Shop are awful & overpriced. Bring your own snacks & sandwiches if you can. There are however some water refill stations throughout the gardens so you can refill your water bottle without paying $3+ for a water bottle.

One old guy was rude at the cashier lady at The Coffee Shop & refused to give her enough money for his tea & pastry. He made a fuss & the supervisor had to step in. Some people are so despicable!

Our Alaskan cruise had an evening stop in Victoria. We took the tour of Butchart Gardens and it was everything we expected. Turning an old quarry into a place of immense beauty is quite a task. It took about 2 hours to walk, observe and enjoy the main quarry gardens and the adjoining gardens- Italian, Japanese, Rose, and the large lawn/concert area and indoor carousel.
The grounds are clean, beautifully maintained and a source of pride for the family that still operates the property.
While the evening tour was great I will someday return to have a day visit where I can have more time to sit, enjoy and simply soak in the serenity.
Restrooms are well maintained, a gift shop is available, snacks are available, a restaurant is available and umbrellas are provided for use at no cost.

Gardens are amazing! Got there about 9 and was great to see with some light. We had the place to ourselves— and the actually close at 11 so it was easy to walk thru with so few people.
