“Dolls House ....but unlike Ibsen”

What a glorious day out we had travelling through Petersfield to this delightful National Trust property. An interesting meander around very pretty gardens and gorgeous and stunning scenery from the grounds.

We had a wonderful time examining the house and the lifestyle of the previous occupants and the women of the house. In a time when women were appendages to their husbands, it was interesting to see how they carved out a life for themselves with artefacts that remain intriguing for all to view. A wonderful treat on a hot summers day.

An enjoyable afternoon at Uppark. Must watch the video concerning the restoration before entering the house. A lot of restoration work is still being carried out but there is access to the ground floor and the servants quarters in the underground passages all lovingly restored to their condition on the night before the fire. Do not miss the dolls house. The grounds are not formal but are worth having a wander round and a very good café serving cream teas rounded off our visit splendidly.

By coincidence we visited Uppark when it was very much in the news. There had just been a catastrophic fire at the famous Glasgow School of Art and the papers were full of the possibilities of restoring it and mentioned the restoration skills learnt and practised at Uppark. There's a video about the Uppark fire which can be viewed in one of the outbuildings and the damage and repairs are much discussed in the information sheets. As you go through the house it's hard to believe the scenes of devastation in the photographs. The house, though not exactly intimate, looks as though it was easy to live in - the dining table is laid for 10, which is not a huge number for the time. I found the decor (dark red walls) rather gloomy, but there were plenty of pictures and objets d'art to enliven the rooms. Portraits and information successfully brought the Fetherstonhaugh family to life. It's interesting to be able to see so much of the servants' quarters and to get a picture of life below stairs from their rooms and from the descriptions by the author H.G.Wells of his mother's time as housekeeper. We didn't have time to explore the gardens but the situation of the house is really lovely.

Enjoyed our visit here one Saturday in June. Not too busy, loved the cellar rooms and connecting tunnels. Gardens weren't as formal as I expected but nice to wander around. Great views of Sussex hills. Wonderful dolls house.
