After picking our daughter and a friend of hers up from the tennis camp in Brallo we stopped off in the charming little town of Varzi for lunch and stumbled across this little gem.
The owner was very welcoming and although there was no room out on the terrace it was cool and pleasant in "Grand dad's ex-stable".
While the owner regaled us with stories about Varzi, (including where to watch out for speed cameras on the way back to Milan, typically vital information for an Italian driver!!) we ate mixed antipasti including fantastic home-made salami, followed by ravioli al brasato and caramelle (another kind of stuffed pasta - green with ham and ricotta inside). We all thought the food was "buonissimo" and we will be sure to go back next time we're in the area.
It was great value for money and we could even buy a salame to bring home with us for the mother-in-law. She loved it, I got some much-needed brownie points, thanks Officina Dei Sapori!

Thank Lucy H

Very small restaurant in a refurbished mew near the old walls of this tiny old village, a former flourishing marketplace.

We were better served than others reported here, and had one very good main course and a good one between the two of us: duck breast with lightly caramelized onions and apples, and polenta (cornmeal) with boar stew respectively.

Before that, we had starters - both cold cuts which are a cornerstone of local cuisine, and cooked light bites - both very good. A cheese platter with half a dozen near-local specialties was also very good, above standard.

Local red, bottled, wine, was ok, slightly overpriced for its very average quality.

The need to pay cash is clearly highlighted at entrance, and not so odd in Italy; we did get a valid receipt which very much settles the matter for us.
The host and owner was a bit more talkative and intruding than we might have wished, still more acceptable than others reported.
