We spent a few hours at this open air museum after visiting a few other attractions in the area. They had a tour but it’s only once/day in the early afternoon. It was fun just to explore on our own. You can easily spend hours here. Several old homes moved here to be preserved and some animals on the property. While in Gutach it is also worthwhile to visit the Rodelbahn and barefoot park (Park mit Allen Sinnen)

This museum is fantastic we spent almost five hours there,we had been staying in the Black Forest fora week and this museum answered all our questions about farming and house construction, history and daily life in the area. It would also be very good for children I was wishing my grandchildren could have seen it!

Be prepared to spend between 2 and 4 hours here. There are working machines from 150 years ago set up on display. At certain times during the day you can see the water powered saws and mill working just as they did years ago. The open air museum provides visitors an insight into the hard lives lived by their distant relatives.
The best time to visit would be week days to avoid crowds.

This open air museum not only is home to some stunning architectural landmarks but brings the local culture, history and way of life to light. The buildings are native to the area but represent different eras, so it is possible to see vividly how living conditions changed and advanced through the centuries. Living conditions in the original big house were remarkably primitive considering the complex architecture and building techniques that went into the building itself.
There are also animals and changing interperative demonstrations, as well as fun places for the kids to burn off some energy.

Trip was prepared by cruise director with guide from a river cruise. Information received on the trip through the Black Forest was interesting and informative. The actual open air museum was great - many different "houses" to look at, preserved the way things were when they were reconstructed and one house was on it's original site, hence the location of the museum. We did not have enough time to enjoy looking at the whole place but would go back if given the chance. Prepare to devote at least 2 hours there (we only had one).
