We were looking for somewhere near Ladysmith for a lunch for 27 family members, some visiting from Europe. I called and spoke with Yota and she was very helpful and said they can handle large groups. We set a menu of a few choices, and the lunch was flawless. The server was very efficient and managed the whole group on her own, even tirelessly splitting the bills between different parties who weren't even sitting together.

The food was very good, and we were set up in a room off to the side, so we had our own space to visit which was awesome.

I would definitely think of Chakalaka again if I needed a space for a large group, or was in the area and looking for a meal.

Had lunch with friends the other day. Welcomed as returning guests, nice to be recognized. They make sure all is ok with the meal, and coffee was kept topped up. Thanked us for our business, chatted when they had a minute, and they were quite busy. The meal was served in a reasonable time and was piping hot, and generous portions.

The night we arrived at Chakalaka was Paint Night--the banquet room was full of people getting an art lesson.
That's evidence of the imagination behind this unusual restaurant, named for a spicy South African dish. ( from Wikipedia: Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy, that is traditionally served with bread, pap, samp, stews, or curries. Chakalaka may have originated in the townships of Johannesburg or on the gold mines surrounding Johannesburg, when Mozambican mineworkers coming off shift cooked tinned produce (tomatoes, beans) with chili to produce a spicy relish with a Portuguese flair to accompany pap. )
I chose the signature dish. For $10 I got a spicy vegetarian dish with bread. I enjoyed it but felt it needed cheese or yogurt or sour cream to cut the spice a bit, One friend relished a delicious Doukobor borscht in a sunny orange colour, another opted for tacos that she pronounced delicious. The restaurant is right on the highway so makes an ideal stop about two hours north of Victoria. Service was prompt and warm.

We were visiting the island and looking for a nice place to stop for dinner. We happened to see this while driving by and decided to stop. Lovely décor, friendly waitress, great service, delicious and satisfying food with decent prices!
