This is a wonderful place to stay (I stayed 6 days). The units are very well equipped, the view from the porch is stunning, and Niki and Piet are great hosts. There are many highlights close by (St. Ninian, Mousa, ...), but then again nothing is really far on the Shetlands. Relaxing, drinking tea and reading, and enjoying the silence are also things that come naturally at Voortrekker. I highly recommend it.
With views over the stunning sandstone cliffs of east Mainland, close to historical brocks, sandy beaches, and perfectly situated as a base for hiking, cycling, or motor travel around the islands. Self catering facilities, with shower, breakfast area and luxury large bed, are excellent. We will certainly visit again.
Everything you want and a little bit more at a reasonable price. Stayed at Voortrekker for a week and had a very enjoyable experience. Views of the surrounding croft land and sea cliffs from the apartment windows. Comfortable beds, nice linens, good wi-fi and better mobile reception (O2) than I expected. Kitchen/dining area fitted with everything you need and basic supplies provided.
Lots of information on "things to do" provided. Niki kindly lent me a book on the Shetland wool trade when she found out I was there to visit some Wool Week events. Pay attention to her recommendations for eating out. We were not disappointed. Too much to see and do in one week so we are planning a return trip. Highlights - seeing the waves crashing against the cliffs in a force 8 gale from the patio door to the apartment and watching the seals coming up onto the beach at St. Ninian's Isle one evening.
