Romantic getaway for two

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Aug 2016via mobile
I recently spent five gorgeous days at the Fairways accommodation in Drakensberg Gardens. I cannot say enough about how wonderful all the staff are, it's quite refreshing to deal with such happy helpful people. The facilities are amazing, there is so much to do! For the whole family! The Berg is breathtakingly beautiful, the views and nature are a welcomed difference from the city. One of my highlights from the trip were the birds that joined us for every meal we had outside. I cannot wait to visit again.

Dear Jenna,

It is fantastic to have reviews from satisfied and happy clients such as yourself.
We have had a great year with a positive and motivated staff compliment, who will all be ecstatic to see your review.
Thank you for your kind words, especially your appreciation of the beauty of the resort and area that we live in.
Even the cheeky Red Winged Starlings that hover about at meal times.

Many thanks,

We went here on a holiday with a group. Service (mainly at the reception) was really terrible, to say the least. I can't think of any more unfrienly staff I've seen in my trips around the world.
For example: me and a few others made a reservation for the next day at the restaurant Wine Knot. Other members of our group tried an hour later to also make a reservation, but apperently the restaurant was 'fully booked'.
When we were at the restaurant, the next day, we saw A LOT of empty seats. I don't think 'fully booked' has a different meaning in Drakensbergen than in the rest of the world.
Also, the staff really didn't bothered to make us feel welcome. All the facilities were closed really soon, they seemed to enjoy to tell us that there were no other possibilities to swim or something like that.
Don't go here; the staff at the reception try to do everything to spoil your vacation!

Dear Sander,

Thank you for your review, the situation of which I am aware of - I do however need to respond.
In respect of your comments on unfriendly staff, I will address that personally.
I am aware of the group requests, and need to state that we advertise, and make very well known the open and close times of our facilities, as well as restaurant policy.
You are referring to our hot pool at the Wellness Centre and gym, which we simply do not open at all hours, and bring in extra staff as and when requested.
For our restaurant, we were fully booked, with staggered sittings, and cannot control clients that do not show. We do not overbook, mainly to ensure decent service for those dining. We also cannot book our restaurants out to groups at one sitting, as we do have many other guests on the resort that wish to use our A la Carte dining. Perhaps a later sitting was not acceptable?
I am aware this may be too late an explanation, but the facts.
With apologies for any inconvenience.

Kind Regards,

I've been travelling for 20 years. I don't always stay in beautiful opulent places and don't mind staying at a hotel as long as it is clean and presentable. This place has not been updated since the 80s. There are several buildings with different names. We stayed in the Weaver building so I can't speak to the others. The carpet was filthy and the bathroom reeked of mold and mildew. The ceiling was sagging and had a hole with water leaking into our room. They simply put a bucket. The rooms have adjoining doors and are not soundproof. The staff were not friendly. Wifi is not available in the rooms, only in reception (and you have to pay for it every time). We were there during South Africa's winter. THEY HAD NO HEAT. We slept in our clothes for 3 nights. Perhaps in the summer months it would be better but I would NEVER recommend this place.

This is a good family style hotel - no frills but exactly right for what we needed. We attended the HOG Durban Chapter Duma Rally and everything ran exactly as planned. Buffet dinners on both nights were of a high standard with a good variety to cater for all tastes. Breakfasts were also served buffet style and were excellent. We had lunch in the Bistro Cafe on one of the afternoons and again were pleasantly surprised by the quality and value for money. Overall service was really good. The views around the property were breathtaking and the snow-capped peaks on the Sunday were stunning. We would definitely go back ... Some really good biking roads in the area.

Dear Fiona and Mark,

It is always a pleasure hosting groups at our hotel, and the fun weekend of the HOGs was no exception.
Thank you very much for the lovely comments, and your positive contribution on TripAdvisor.
We all loved hosting you, and if not for a rally, we certainly hope to see you back in our beautiful part of the mountains again.

Many thanks,

This was the perfect place for a group of Moms with kids. The staff were helpful at getting the kids fed before us, helping with activities for them and letting the moms have a break too. We hiked, rode bikes, rowed boats, played tennis, went on pony rides, swam, jumped on trampolines, played Bingo, ate, drank, enjoyed the Spa and were merry. It even snowed for us! All in all a great, catered well oiled machine that delivers.

Dear Amanda,

We recall your group visit over the holidays, and are happy we could help with the kids - the Mums certainly had their hands full.
I know it was the second year of the group, and hope that we have the pleasure of hosting you again at Drak Gardens. If so, please contact us direct at the hotel, and we will ensure similar planning for everyone's comfort.

Kind Regards,
