I first went on a tour with Jordan in December 2017 and since then whenever I’ve been in Cape Town it’s my first stop and my 20th tour with Atlantic Outlook is coming up!
There’s never a dolphin (or any wildlife) guarantee but all I can say is I’ve never been on one of their 7am tours without seeing them.
If you’re lucky you’ll also see seals, sun fish and whales. Once this season we kayaked along three (southern right) whales for almost an hour, two adults and a very playful young one that couldn’t get enough of us - obviously vice versa.
The team gives you a security briefing just in case, but the boats are very stable even for inexperienced paddlers, and when you encounter wildlife you’ll be instructed on how close to approach them and behave around them so you’re enjoying the experience without disturbing the ocean wildlife.
Nevertheless I’ve never had whales come as close I’ve experienced here. You don’t realize how massive these creatures are until their huge tale pops out of the water about ten meters in front of you.
Not to detract anything from the many dolphin pods we’ve seen and interacted with.
All in all I can’t say enough good things about kayaking here. Be prepared to get wet even if you don’t fall in because the paddles shoot water everywhere and you’ll be in double seater kayaks (back person gets more soaked IMHO), bring sunscreen and a water bottle.
And if you’re on the ocean and encounter plastic, do the world a favor and pick it up into your boat and take it back with you.
