Loved this restaurant! Under the direction of chef Cheyne Morrisby (he has 2 great restaurants in Hour Bag as well) this is superb Japanese cuisine in Green Point. The menu is varied, and each dish is full of flavour and beautifully presented. Service is excellent too.
Highly recommend it!

This small restaurant offered two seating a: one at 6:00 and one at 8:00. Second seating was sold out so we booked for 6:00. You could choose from the menu, or a 5 course tasting menu. We chose that, and the plates started coming till there was no more room on the table. The hot food didn't stay hot, and it was apparent they were rushing everything from the kitchen to get us out in the 2 hour time frame. We asked them to slow down with the food. The manager come to remind us that we had to give up our table at 8:00. I asked him why they would offer a 5 course meal if there wasn't time enough to enjoy it. All he could say was, "we were told when we booked we had to give up our table ". Of the 10 dishes that came to the table, the fried calamari was the only thing that was tasty and cooked well. The beef tataki was smothered in some kind of thick sauce, and the broccoli was somotheted in the same. The Korean beef didn't taste fresh, the soba noodles were cold and fishy, the mushrooms were smothered in a cream sauce and the special "black rice risotto" was in a pool of sweet tom yum sauce. Edamame was soaked in butter. There was nothing fresh, light or remotely Japanese about this fusion confusion food. Blah.

Decided to head to Shio after dining at Cheyne's in Hout Bay.

I am a huge fan of Asian food and have heard that Shio was one to try. We decided to try the Tasting Experience for R250. Really cool that there is also a vegetarian tasting menu for R200.

We had, among a few others, Forbidden Black Rice Risotto with Lobster Popcorn, Miso Aubergine, Grilled King Oyster, Soba Noodles and Beef Tartare. We ended with the Banana Cream Pie and Poached Pear and Black Sesame Ice Cream.

The service was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.

We really enjoyed the food, experience and service and found the value for money really incredible considering the location.

Would definitely recommend.

The food is not bad (average), yet was expensive.

The service was poor.

I find dirty bathrooms in a restaurant to be indicative of a lack of (at least) attention to detail, and these bathrooms were dirty and un-kept (and, I suppose, reflected the staff's attitude we experienced generally).

For R2500 for a table of 4, you can do a lot better elsewhere.

I would not go back.

We arrived at Shio late having flown in late from Joburg. The staff did not have a free table for 4 but quickly rearranged the seating to cater for us. The atmosphere is cosy and sophisticated. The cocktails were highly unusual with spices but were yummy. The meals were out of this world, being tappas style we were advised by the staff to order two dishes each. We tasted 8 different dishes and all were amazing. The standout dish was the blackened salmon dish, cooked to perfection. The calamari and soft shell crab dishes were also fantastic. We are in Cape town for another week and will be back to Shio before we leave. Highly recommended.
