The pools and beach are gorgeous. We really didn't have problems with the beach boys, as there was security on the beach here and there. The hotel offers amazing views. The food was pretty good- some things we really liked and others we didn't care for, but that can be anywhere. The pasta at dinner was really great, as you can make your own, or ask the chef to make something of their choice. The staff is very friendly. Live music and cultural performances were offered while we were there as well. The hotel is right next door to a place with a lively happy hour at sunset, that you can walk the beach to.

There was an issue with the spa, as we had asked to make reservations ahead of time, before arrival, but they told us they weren't needed...but then we got there and there were barely any reservations available. There were 3 of us and we couldn't get massages on the same day. They give you a little ticket for a free 5 minute foot massage, but you need a reservation for that too- which is highly limited.

This is going to be a mixed review.

First and foremost, we loved our introduction to East Africa and Tanzania with the combination of city ( Dar Es Salaam ), safari ( Rufiji River Camp ) and Zanzibar.
A smorgasbord of colours, smiles, smells, wildlife, nature and simplicity.
The one hour drive to the hotel was nice and a feast for the eyes.
The turn off from the main road to the big security gate unacceptable. The least the hotel could do is take ownership to put a simple graded road in. Not so much for comfort, but the contrast after entering the gates is huge - there is no need for that, it looks if there is no connection between the property and the community it lives in.

This is a theme that keeps re-occurring throughout.

Welcome was fine, but snacks inedible and welcome juice seemed stale.
Family room 506 nice, room clean, wifi fine, good location. But a bit odd sharing one big room with our 2 teenagers.
Room cleanliness fine, housekeeping good - maybe a little too generous with spreading flower petals throughout the room.
There is only 1 environmental message card in the room, hidden next to the bathtub. Nowhere else any mention. But even worse, housekeeping are completely ignoring the hotel 'initiative'. If I had not stopped them, they would have changed the sheets every day and brought stacks and stacks of fresh towels ... why?
The room is fine, but like the rest of the hotel, a serious investment is required to bring it back up to standard.

I had various informal discussions with management throughout my stay - most of them from GM down are Italian. ( what is with the Italians in that part of Zanzibar? Even the beach sellers all spoke the language.. )
All of them believe they are running a 5 star property - in Zanzibar terms maybe, but globally?
Maybe we should start separating holiday destinations from 'regular' hotels?
The hotel needs a very critical walk through and owner/management need to make a decision if they want to step up.
Many improvements can be made without adding cost - but in general I would say that success and high occupancy has made management lazy.
Restaurant and Housekeeping staff are all fine ( within location reason ) but above that needs a jolt.
Why would we still accept photo copied flyers in our room with black stripes all over, why do most toilets either smell, have bad toilet paper, doors don't close, lights don't work, why can't we get a decent coffee in a hotel managed by Italians, why is nothing Tanzanian celebrated ( including coffee that grows in abundance ), why are magazines and books in common areas ages old, why can't I sit down at the experiences desk, why do I need to be reminded time and time again what is and what is not inclusive etcetera etcetera.

The Stone Town trip we booked via the hotel was a rip-off. The guide was complete rubbish and added 0 value, no water in the car and a stock standard experience. And why am I reminded on numerous occasions not to pay cash for tours, to be told it can only be paid for cash US dollars?

Food and Beverage: I guess was fine, but also here everything is auto pilot... 7 day rotations. Can someone please check the signage at the buffet dishes, the English is shocking.
We were invited for a beach dinner one night, which was very nice. This is the 'a la carte' fine-dining experience in the sand.
The head chef looks cool in his multi coloured surgeon pants - but please, can he go back in the kitchen and cook?
Starter was nice, but rest was really bad. If it was no for our lovely waitress and the surrounds it would have been a very average night.

Spa: run by a bored South African young lady. Experience was just ok - but nowhere near any premium spa. The products are pretty good, but therapist could not tell me anything about it. Treatment was ok, but coming from the beach, the least you should do is clean the feet and check on how comfortable the guest is - same here, auto pilot.

Now, it seems a litany of complaints, but it is not. I am referencing the hotel with what they believe is their level.
We had a good time, loved the pool, clean beach, friendly faces and desire to be of service. We loved the 5pm volleyball matches and met some really nice people.

The hotel can be so much better and in 2018 there is a responsibility to being one with your environment and celebrate that.
I could have been at any other tropical island, I wanted to be in Zanzibar.

Room Tip: get rooms mid to lower tier

Dear Yazidyazid,

I truly appreciate you taking the time to express your feedback.

I read it with much concern and there are no words to express how sorry I am for the opinion of our hotel that you took away with you.

Regarding our beach we proud ourselves to have one of the most beautiful beach on the island and the beachboys are not allow to enter it because we have security 24/7 to guarantee the privacy of our guests. Thus I am very surprised to read that the beachboys were disturbing, probably they were approaching the guests in the area next to our beach where is a public one.

With reference to the food variety we try to offer a wide range of different choices with both local and international option. Our chefs team comes from different nationalities, from Italians to Mauritians, which guarantee that the buffet has always many alternatives dishes to enjoy. We regret that this was not the perception from your side.

The team is always very kind and constantly receiving compliments from our guests for their service. Since your feedback was the opposite of what we hear every day, it makes us think that on that occasion we registered a lack of care. Thanks to your report, they will show, in future, more attention and kindness, which has always distinguished them.

Thanks again for your feedback: our guests’ comment are important to us and help to improve day by day the level of service delivered to our guests.

We look forward to welcoming You back in our Gold Zanzibar and we remain at your full disposal for any additional assistance You may need.

Best regards from Zanzibar,
Roberto Di Pierno, General Manager

The Gold Zanzibar hotel is the perfect beach hotel. It is in the North-West of Zanzibar, around 60-80 minutes from Stonetown / the Airport via tarred road except the last 200-400 m bad road again.
Located at a small beach with only few hotels, it consists out of several 2-story buildings with 10 rooms each and individual bungalows, a large restaurant area, a stylish bar often with live music, a large seawater pool with a second restaurant next to it, and a beach area with comfortable sunbeds and cocos-thatched umbrellas.
The rooms are air-conditioned and very nice, with a comfortable large bed with mosquito net and bathrooms / cloth cabinets in the back. While we were there, there was a problem with wifi as the hotel got a new system, but this was resolved after 1-2 days.
Dinner is a buffet dinner, but the best buffet dinner we ever experienced: there were 4-5 cooking stations, where different meat, shrimp, octopus and fish were grilled freshly (and to the gradation of cooking one requested), and one station for freshly cooked pasta (the hotel is under Italian leadership - good pasta, good salami, good ice-cream!). In addition there were several boiling pots with local dishes, chafing dishes with rice, vegetables etc, different kind of bread and starters, an ice-cream station, and a cool room for salads, starters and deserts. Especially the freshly grilled fish was fantastic, as large tuna or swordfish was filleted just in front of the guests before grilling. During two nights, dinner was served at the pool area (both accompanied with a really nice acrobatic show), one time with freshly grilled crayfish which was also delicious. We stayed for 5 nights at the Gold, and could not taste everything!
The beach area was wonderful, enough sunbeds and enough space inbetween them, and local beach sellers had to keep a certain distance, which guaranteed some privacy. The sea was warm and calm, the beach sandy and nearly white, with no need for beach shoes except that the sand got hot during daytime. Only during low tide some rocks are close enough the water surface that they could be touched by feet during swimming - avoid this, as there sea urchins with painful stings...
For those who do not want to go into the sea, there was a large seawater pool with artificial waterfall and massage jets. There is also a Spa but we did not use it.
What made the Gold special was the outstanding service: our room was decorated each day nicely with fresh flowers. Service during breakfast or dinner was very attentive and friendly, lunch could be ordered from a small menu at the beach (on tableware and with linen napkin!). If you entered the lobby for any questions you were immediately served to your full satisfaction. When we called on the last day as we needed help with our luggage, within a minute someone arrived at our room assisting us. Everybody was very friendly and helpful, and the beach staff even removed a small sea urchin sting from my foot which would have hurt me otherwise.
It couldn't have been nicer!

We stayed here for few days. Beach is superb white sand. The spa is top notch. Restaurants are nice. We were having breakfast and dinner here. Live cooking was really good. Both during breakfast and dinner. Water sports is available only few yards from the resort beach. There they have parasailing, jet skis and whole lot. Would love going there any time.
